Notable Quote
"The HVO EM volunteer month in Bhutan is an invaluable experience to a "Western" physician - both a lesson in the humility and humanity of medicine. I went to Bhutan to function as a teacher and found that I learned more than I ever imagined. I will always be thankful for this volunteer experience and can honestly say that it has changed the way I practice medicine."

Greetings!
I have just returned from Bhutan, where Board Chair Julia Plotnick and I met with Ministry of Health officials and personnel at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital to thank them for their long-term support and enthusiasm for HVO's programs. One of HVO's longest partnerships is with Bhutan, which first requested volunteers in 1991.
It was exciting to see the changes and progress that have occurred since my last visit, some 12 years ago. A program that initially started with orthopaedic volunteers has expanded to include physical therapy, medicine, pediatrics, nurse anesthesia, emergency medicine, and mental health. While we were there we discussed the possibility of expanding our efforts to include nursing education. This broad spectrum of projects allows for a real synergy to develop, and I hope we can see more multi-disciplinary impact in many of our other program sites.
Our visit coincided with the start of the lunar New Year, the Year of the Dragon, so I wish you all best wishes for a dynamic and productive year!
Sincerely,
Nancy
