HVO Launches Pediatrics Program in Bhutan |
|
[Washington, DC - August 23, 2010] - HVO is pleased to announce the establishment of a pediatrics program in Bhutan at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Thimphu. The 350-bed National Referral Hospital is the primary referral hospital for the country and health care is provided free of charge. The Pediatrics Department is staffed by three pediatricians who will work closely with HVO volunteers.
Volunteers will provide training to the pediatricians, general medical duty officers, and nurses in the Pediatric Department. The focus areas for training include: general pediatrics, resuscitation of the newborn, pediatric nursing, neonatology and developmental pediatrics. Both in-patient and out-patient pediatric services are quite busy at NRH and most training will take place in the hospital and on the wards.
Volunteers must hold a current license and be board certified/eligible in pediatrics. General pediatricians are preferred for the first nine months of the program, although sub-specialists will be considered. HVO volunteers are responsible for providing presentations and clinical teaching and training. HVO is seeking volunteers for one month assignments.
HVO has been working with the Ministry of Health in Bhutan since 1990 and currently has 7 programs in this small Himalayan country. All of HVO's programs are focused on human resource development within the health sector. The primary inputs are (1) HVO volunteers, health care professionals committed to sharing their knowledge and expertise, (2) the identification and procurement of educational materials and appropriate equipment to further strengthen the capacity of health care providers in Bhutan to provide skilled, timely, and appropriate health care.
