Working Together to Energize Michigan's Economy!

EDITOR: The following is an editorial written by State Representative Harold Haugh (D-Roseville). If you have questions about this commentary, please contact Haugh's office by calling toll-free (866) 994-2844.

S of MiGov. Snyder recently laid out his plans to turn around Michigan's economy in his State of the State address. I liked his focus on bipartisanship and improving Michigan's business climate. While we face great challenges, I truly believe we can get Michigan back on track - and that starts by working together to ensure small businesses can succeed and create jobs for our residents.

Political bickering has gotten us nowhere. I hope the new administration's actions live up to the bipartisan tone of the State of the State address. Both the Governor and the new Legislature would be wise to take a lesson from the business world. Chamber of Commerce members come together to address important issues because we all benefit from promoting our community and our businesses. We will all benefit if lawmakers can put politics aside, and focus on making Michigan a better place to do business.

This is important as small businesses are the true job creators and the engine that drives our economy. Our state government needs to eliminate the obstacles that prevent businesses from creating jobs and putting our residents back to work. And like the Governor said, we must focus on improving the climate for Michigan businesses that are already here. Sure we need to bring new businesses to Michigan, but we can't do that while allowing our fantastic home-grown businesses to fail. Michigan's small businesses already have roots here and are invested in our communities - we'd be foolish to think we can jumpstart our economy without them.

I am excited to get to work to improve the business climate in Michigan. I was pleased that the Governor expressed support for the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) project. DRIC benefits Michigan because businesses of all sizes from the auto industry to agriculture count on efficient reliable transportation and a second, public bridge to Canada would create tens of thousands of jobs. My colleagues and I in the House cleared the way for DRIC last session, only to see the legislation die in the Senate - we can't allow that to happen again.

I look forward to working with the new Governor and Legislature on projects like DRIC in a way that allows businesses to create jobs while ensuring we protect key priorities like educating our children and keeping police and firefighters on the street.

Revamping Michigan's economy will not be an easy task. But that resurgence starts with everyone from business and labor to government and non-profits working together to build a brighter future. Cooperation and common-sense legislation like DRIC will help businesses succeed and lead Michigan's recovery. If we work together, we can rebuild Michigan and the jobs will follow.

State Representative Harold Haugh represents the 42nd House District, which covers Roseville, Eastpointe and part of Fraser. To contact him, call (866) 994-2844 or e-mail haroldhaugh@house.mi.gov. To subscribe to his e-newsletter, visit his website, house.mi.gov/hhaugh.

Meet Senator Steven Bieda!

Steve BOn January 12, 2011, I was formally sworn in as State Senator for the Ninth State Senate District. I want to thank those who placed their trust in me on Election Day. It truly is an honor, and a position of great responsibility. The Ninth encompasses the entire cities of Eastpointe, Fraser, Center Line, St. Clair Shores and Warren, as well as the area of Grosse Pointe Shores formerly known as Lake Township. I have been appointed Minority Floor Leader, and hold the post of Minority Vice Chair on the Finance, Judiciary and Redistricting Committees. In addition, I am a member of the Insurance, Capitol, Energy & Technology, and Uniform State Laws Committees. If that seems like a lot, it actually is; I have more committee assignments than anyone else in either the Senate or House, I like it that way.

I come from a legal and policy making background, and one of my major goals is to work to reinvent Michigan. To that end, I have been actively working on initiatives to update Michigan's regulatory climate, including revisions to our tax code, as well as how we do the state budget.I am committed to working with individuals on both sides of the aisle, and I have an open door policy to encourage thoughtful discussion on the issues that face us.

It is no secret that Michigan, as well as the nation, is facing some real economic hardships and challenges. While there are some bright spots on the horizon, we have to be adaptive to the many changes and challenges before us.  I look forward to meeting and working with you as we undertake these challenges.

In the meantime, if you have any questions of concerns, please feel free to either write me at Senator Steven Bieda, State Capitol, P.O. Box 30036, Lansing, MI 48909-7536, email at SenSBieda@senate.michigan.gov, or call me at 517.373.8360, or fax at 517.373.9230.

I look forward to working with you and appreciate your support.
