Greetings!
It's that time of year!
The Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 19th Annual "Deck the Halls" Christmas Auction on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Eastpointe Manor, South of Ten Mile Road on Gratiot Ave.
Our joint efforts help support many local charities including Care House, Eastpointe Goodfellows, Eastpointe Community Chest Networking Forum, The Scholarship Fund and many others. It is no secret that the economy in Michigan is suffering and we are all feeling the pinch. Unfortunately, many times it is these charities that are the first to suffer and get hit the hardest in the end.
The "Deck the Halls" auction is a great opportunity to join together with members of the community to support our local charities in a big way.
Please fill out the donation sheet and fax it back to 586-776-7808, e-mail your donation information to Director@EPChamber.com or mail your form to:
Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce 24840 Gratiot Ave. Suite B, Eastpointe, MI 48021 Please contact one of the Auction Chair Persons to help you with questions you may have.
We again thank you for your continued support of the Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber and Deck the Halls Auction! Your donation may be tax-deductible, our Tax ID number is 38-1489416.

 | FIXING OUR
BROKEN GOVERNMENT
I've seen
firsthand that Lansing is broken and I'm fighting to fix it. We need to make
sure that our state legislators are truly serving you - the people they
represent - and are sharing in the sacrifice being asked of all Michigan
residents in these tough times. You deserve a government that is focused on
what truly matters - making Michigan the best place in the country to start
and grow small businesses so our children and grandchildren can find
good-paying jobs here; educating our students and workers; and ensuring that you
have the financial security and peace of mind you deserve after working hard all
your life.
These
government reforms will help ensure that every time lawmakers set foot in our
State Capitol, they are putting these priorities and your best interests
first.
That's
why I've supported plans to:
ˇ End taxpayer-funded lifetime health
care for Michigan's lawmakers.
ˇ Cut the salaries of lawmakers and
other elected officials - including my own - by 10 percent.
ˇ Dock lawmakers' pay for each day the
budget isn't balanced past deadline.
ˇ Dock lawmakers' pay each time they
miss a day of session.
ˇ Prohibit lawmakers from being
lobbyists for two years after leaving office.
Best
Regards
Harold L. Haugh

| East Detroit 50 Year History!
In the
spring of 1960, three dedicated and hard working men, Bob Prong, Dick Leidecker
and John Karas decided to establish a football team in East Detroit. They discussed their ideas,
hopes and dreams with the other ballplayers and decided to sell candy to get
the needed funds to start the organization. They also contacted a sports store
to establish credit to purchase equipment to start the East Detroit Tigercat
Organization.
The first
year, the East Detroit Tigercat Organization had two teams; varsity and junior
varsity and due to its popularity and success, a year later the freshman team
was added. In the beginning they played teams from the American Football
League, then they decided to form their own league with St. Clair Shores,
Roseville and Grosse Pointe called the Eastern Suburban Football League. The
Tigercats have grown into two flag teams, three tackle teams and five
cheerleading squads. The
Tigercats at one time did struggle to keep afloat but now are one of the
premier organizations in the league. The league now consists on ten teams. It
is still called the Eastern Suburban Football League.
The last 14
years Ron Orzechowski has had a vision to make the Tigercats organization what
it is today. In the last few years we
have had a number of kids that continue to come and finish their careers with
the Tigercats. The faces on the kids have shown the progress that we have made.
We make sure the kids have the safest equipment available to them. In talking
to parents they have nothing but good things to say. While most of our kids
live in Eastpointe we do have some that travel from other cities as far away as
Dearborn.
In the
beginning of the Tigercats a restauranteur volunteered the use of a storage
area for their equipment and when a parcel of land became available, Bob and
Dick and Frank Ferretti went to First State Bank for a loan where the owner of
the bank personally approved it. Frank donated the supplies to erect a building
on the site and his employees donated their time to construct it. At this time
First State Bank is still where we do all of are banking.
With the
help and support of the community and several fundraisers we hold, we have been
able to keep the cost low, for the children to participate. At the end of each
year, we hold a banquet for the children, at which time they receive a trophy
for participation. With friends and family in attendance, we have seen this
event start with about 200 people and grow to over 600. Without the community's
donations it would be very difficult to provide such an experience for them.
We are
still using and maintaining the building that the founding fathers donated and
built with their own hands. We are very thankful to the founding fathers of
this organization for every dream and vision they had back then and hope that
it will continue for another 50 years.

| Macomb Cultural and
Economic Partnership (MCEP)
The MCEP
had the honor of hosting a delegation of Shanghai University students and
teachers for 2 weeks this past July. In an effort to form cultural
ties and lasting relationships with China, Macomb County families housed the
students during their stay. The experience received highly
favorable reviews from all the host families and students.
Attached are articles from the Detroit News and C&G newspaper about
the experience, as well as some pictures from their stay. Following
the success of this program, plans have been made to continue short-term
educational programs and possibly longer term educational exchanges with
Shanghai University. As part of this program, it is essential to
find community members to support these efforts in both hosting and advisory
capacities. In this regard, please find attached a form for
families interested in advising a Chinese student during long-term stays in
Macomb County. If you are interested in hosting students in any
fashion, please contact us as well. Kind

A Bigger Problem Looms
With the loss of $475 million in federal
road funds looming, if the Legislature doesn't act to find $84 million for roads
in a new state budget by Oct. 1, Department of Transportation Director Kirk
STEUDLE told MIRS, "a piece that is getting lost" is the bigger
funding problem next year.
"There is another one next year that is more
than the $84 million," Steudle said. "We don't know yet what the number is.
There will be this problem every year without a long-term solution to road
funding, and we don't have one yet."
Steudle said that with more
fuel-efficient vehicles on the road, the problem is going to continue to
get worse under the current funding system and the roads will continue to
deteriorate.
"I've been talking about this problem for four years,"
Steudle added, "so no one should be unaware."
The House and Senate have
both passed legislation to secure the $475 million, but they are far apart on
the solution. The House takes the $84 million from the General Fund. The Senate
answer is to shift money from the MDOT's highway maintenance account.
On
another front, although Sen. Jud GILBERT (R-Algonac), the Senate's point
person on transportation, said two weeks ago he is moving ahead with substitute
legislation to deal with a funding mechanism to pay for a Detroit River
International Crossing (DRIC), Steudle said again Saturday he has yet to see a
draft.
That was the same answer Steudle gave MIRS following the
July meeting of the Michigan Transportation Commission.
"He [Gilbert]
said he wants our input," Steudle said. "I have a good working relationship with
him."
Gilbert said there wouldn't be action in the Senate on DRIC until
fall.
Asked if the DRIC issue and the road funding issues were
intertwined in Legislature, Steudle responded, "I don't know about the
Legislature, they aren't in my mind."
