Guild Spotlight:
Anglian Polymer Clay Guild (UK)
We are a new group based in East Anglia in the United Kingdom and aiming to provide a place for those interested in using Polymer Clay as an art medium to meet and exchange ideas and techniques. The group began as a result of inspiration by Sue Heaser from whom many of us first learned Polymer Clay techniques. We held our first event in June 2012 and our second took place in August 2012.

Have Yourself a Polymer Clay Halloween
by Leila Bidler Interesting facts about Halloween Traditions and Superstitions: As we all probably know Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain - November 1 (when the Celts celebrated the new year) is the day that marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of winter, a dark and cold time of the year of course associated also with human death. On the night before the new year they believed that the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred and the ghosts of the dead would return to earth. This might cause trouble and damaging the crops but also help to make predictions about the future. To celebrate the event Druids would built sacred bonfires and the Celts wore costumes, often consisting of animal heads and skins. In America the first celebrations included "play parties" and events to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead or tell ghost stories. Even mischief-making happened as the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups, as well as those of the Native Americans, mixed. Over time, a distinctly American version of Halloween would slowly emerge.

IPCA Board Member Elections
|
It's that time again! The IPCA Executive Board will be holding elections for a number of board positions. The members who hold those positions are currently reaching the end of their terms of office. Each volunteer position varies with regard to effort level and time commitment, but they all share one very important characteristic: each is necessary to ensure the continued success of the Association.
The Board is hoping that you are willing to squeeze in one more very important volunteer commitment. The board positions that are up for election this year are...
President
Vice President- Outreach and Education
International Guild Liason
Communications Liason
Recording Secretary
Please take just a moment and consider the benefits the IPCA brings to the polymer clay community: The IPCA website, facebook pages, and newsletter offer a wealth of information. With a few clicks of the mouse you can find local guild info, event announcements, business opportunities, creative challenges, a member web directory, and so much more.
What may not be as visible is the work that goes on behind the scenes, as board members are actively involved in bringing all that information to you. They are not only concerned with the present--they also envision the future. And the future is filled with plans and ideas that cannot be accomplished without your support.

Contributor Spotlight: Leila Bidler
|
We don't often get a chance to share with you what goes on behind the scenes in the lives of our newsletter contributors. So here's a little bit about Leila, who is in charge of our Worldwide Calls For Entry section in the sidebar. Leila also frequently contributes an article to the newsletter, and this month she's given us a great motivation to make something in the Halloween spirit. Be sure to check out her article, "Have Yourself A Polymer Clay Halloween".
My name is Leila Bidler, I'm German but currently I live in northern Italy with my husband Franco.
My interest in polymer clay started early, around age 6 or 7, when I used to play with it with my mother, we would work without any now known technique and create pins, door signs and small figures and it lasted for some years, I still have a brooch and my grandparents name sign from back then.
I've always kept "in touch" with my creative muses, feeling the need to express my feelings, hopes, fears and moods with colour and painting and sketching and creating with my hands always and throughout my schooling at the Institute of Art ISA Mengaroni in Pesaro, Italy.
Polymer Clay as an art medium came into my focus again some years ago and I find it perfect to express myself in so many different ways. Working in polymer clay allows me to indulge in my love for colour, it's like playing and creating with solid color.
I use Polymer Clay to realize a whole lot of artefacts - jewellery, bowls, vases, figures, home decorations and ornaments of all kinds...my main interest is in imitative techniques to simulate bone, ivory, gem stones and glass and to explore geometric patterns in canes, my biggest "aha" moment in polymer clay was when I first saw Sandra McCaw's DVD - her techniques and way to work is what had the most impact on me and my way to work with clay.
