Hot Clay Swap,
Cool Friends Bead Strand
Participating in the swaps and the bead strand project is a great way to form new relationships and "strut your stuff."
The first swap is a group swap themed Hot Clay. The second swap will be a brown-bag swap coordinated on site by Rosana Van Horn. Details of that swap will be announced to attendees closer to the date.
The theme for the 2011 Bead Strand is Cool Friends. We ask that participants donate at least one matching pair of beads to the IPCA. The beads will be used to create two Retreat Bead Strands. One will be held in the IPCA Archive and the other will be auctioned at the Retreat. Your bead donations will be photographed and posted, with your name, to the IPCA website after the Retreat. Debbie Jackson is coordinating the bead strand event.
Guidelines for the swaps and bead strand are available on the Retreat website.

The IPCA 2011 Retreat:
A Treat For Everyone
The IPCA officers and committee members, all volunteers, work very hard to create programs and opportunities for all Association members, experienced and novice clayers alike. The Synergy conferences have focused on elevating polymer clay in the professional craft community. But the Association also envisioned a place for clay enthusiasts at every level to come together in a relaxed learning atmosphere--including even our newest members just discovering the joy of a Skinner blend! To meet this need we began the International Retreat in 2009. It was so well received that plans were immediately initiated to bring it back in 2011. Only this time in conjunction with the Metal Clay World Conference, where we will be sharing meals, a vendor hall, crossover exposure and so much more! The 2011 IPCA Retreat has been base-priced to be more affordable but offers optional add-ons like Pre-Retreat Classes with world class instructors, and a Post-Retreat banquet, live auction with auctioneers Christy Friesen and Lisa Pavelka, and a bus trip to the Racine Art Museum for a sneak peak of the new Polymer Clay Exhibit. First-time Retreat attendee Jill Palumbo had this to say about her experience: "If anyone is still on the fence about coming...please don't be! I was so afraid to attend the retreat in 2009. I was sure everyone would find out I really 'wasn't good enough to be there', since I was so new to claying and had no real training in art of any kind. I'm so happy I didn't let my fears get the best of me. When I left I was on top of the world, with new ideas and wonderful new friends. All the clayers were supportive, helpful and most of all fun. I felt totally welcome and had the best experience ever." Meeting the needs of its members at all levels of experience is a critical mission of the IPCA. Click on these links for more information about the Retreat and the Metal Clay Conference. For the latest details of the Retreat events and to hear what members are saying, visit our Retreat page on Facebook. We hope you'll join us in July for these exciting events! Donated Items Add Spark to Retreat 2011 Generous Goody Bags and Tempting Auction Items
Goodies are pouring in for our 2nd Annual IPCA Retreat in Chicago July 13-16! Each attendee will find in their goody bag a complimentary issue of Art Jewelry, Polymer Café and Metal Clay Art magazines, a wonderful mold from Penni Jo Couch, clay samples from Polyform, Kato, and Pardo, special goodies from Lisa Pavelka and a DVD from the IPCA, just to name a few! Many generous donors have contributed auction items, including Judy Belcher, Victoria James, Karen Ottenbreit, Julie Picarello, Carol Simmons, Maureen Thomas, Ann Dillon, Julie Eakes, Debbie Jackson, and Heather Campbell. From across the pond, our international members adding to the auction items are Natalia Garcia DeLeaniz, Carol Blackburn, Alison Gallant and Bettina Welker, our guest artist for the Retreat. The latest books by Cynthia Tinapple/Dayle Doroshow, Creative Sparks, Sarajane Helm's A Collection of Polymer Clay Masks, and Patterns in Polymer, by Julie Picarello (donated by Kalmbach Publishing), will make an appearance! Polymer Clay Express has donated one of their deluxe extruders, Penni Jo Couch more of her large multi-molds, Donna Kato included a free class from CraftEdu, and Alison Lee has generously given 5 DVDs of her online classes at CraftCast plus one live class of your choice! Polyform is filling a basket I have woven with polymer clay. With more goodies coming in every week, this is only a small listing of everything we can look forward to at the IPCA 2011 Retreat! There are still spaces left so don't miss the fun! If you've already registered for the Retreat, but didn't include the closing event on Saturday night, it's not too late to add that to your registration. Karen Woods, IPCA Retreat Donations Chair

Retreat Scholarship Recipient Announced
I'm delighted to announce that the IPCA Retreat 2011 Scholarship has been awarded to Else Meek from Bothell, WA. Our impartial judge, Tammy Honaman, was very impressed with the high quality of all the applications but thought Else was the one who would benefit most from the award.
Our grateful thanks go to Tammy for her time in considering the requests and to Rob and Wilma Yost at Polymer Clay Express for their generous sponsorship of the Scholarship.

Heather Campbell
 | | "Lost Treasure," by Heather Campbell |
Heather Campbell's Purple Door Creative Art Studio
is located in the old summer kitchen of her charming 1880s Victorian home on the shores of the Logan River in northern Utah. Separate from the main house, the space was used for cooking and washing before the turn of the century. Now it's the birthplace of Heather's original, one of a kind jewelry and sculptural pieces. Heather's unique and intricate work, she explains, is "inspired by the natural balance of color, texture and design revealed each day in our fascinating world."
Heather Campbell is one of the polymer clay artists whose work, we're so proud to see, is making its way into major Fine Art venues. Most recently, one of her larger wall sculptures was juried into the Utah Springville Art Museum's 2011 Spring Salon, an exhibit that features all of the top artists in Utah and which confers many prestigious awards. Heather's amazing piece, entitled "Lost Treasure," movingly commemorates the 2008 earthquake in China, in which hundreds of children were buried while they were in school. This piece received a Merit Award. The show runs from April 22 until July 3, 2011. (To see a larger view of "Lost Treasure," click here.)
Heather will also have an article in the July issue of Art Jewelry Magazine. The title is "Making a Faux Batik Pendant." Heather demonstrated a version of this technique to a group of fascinated 2009 Retreat attendees.
