Summertime BluesSuzanne Ivester
Between June and September, when I run into
acquaintances I haven't seen for a while, I'm often
asked, "How's your summer going?" Why doesn't anyone ever ask, "How's your spring been so far?" or "Are you enjoying winter?"

Summer is a season that most people love, or at least say they love. Personally, summer brings out the curmudgeon in me. I should explain that it's been a very long time since I was a student or even had one living in my house. Students and teachers have a reason to love summer, but I contend that polymer clayers don't.

Just a few gripes about summer, from a clayer's perspective: Soft, sticky clay; running back and forth to the fridge with soft, sticky clay; paying extra for express shipping to avoid clay curing in the mail; having to make jewelry in fall colors for upcoming shows when the weather is still steamy; and heating up your oven to cure clay when you wouldn't dream of cooking.

If you're a student or a teacher, or have some other reason to love summer, your days are probably full of swimming, cycling, boating, surfing, and fishing. That's wonderful! But how are you managing your polymer clay addiction? This is not a rhetorical question--I'd actually like to know.

If there's anyone else out there who feels like I do about summer, let's stay in the air-conditioned workroom at the IPCA July retreat and indulge ourselves in our substance of choice--polymer clay.

For the rest of you, if leave your clay in the back seat of your car while you're out snorkeling, don't say I didn't warn you.

How Can We Help You?
This is probably the most important question we can ask our membership, and the answers are as varied as each one of us.

We are committed to bringing you the most relevant information and useful resources in polymer clay and related arts, with the services of the IPCA website, members gallery, Flickr site, Yahoo IPCA Liaison group site, monthly newsletter, the POLYInformer, lending library, and most importantly, the connections to hundreds of fellow international polymer clay and mixed media artists in the Association.  The IPCA archives also contain a wealth of information and instructional material available to members online.

The resource links listed to the left are growing, but are only a few of the ways we can all share the benefits of combined knowledge and our variety of experiences.  Please send us your guild updates and links to interesting sites, and contact us if you have any questions or to submit information to share with your Association members.

Kerrie Venner, our Vice President of Education and Outreach, or any of our Board members are also available to answer any questions about polymer clay or to provide specific information on request.

From the IPCA Liaisons

It's all go here in Europe and new polymer clay groups are in their creation stages! If you live In Switzerland and would like to join a new Polymer Clay group then please contact me and I will forward your details to the coordinating person. And there's more..... for those of you in the Netherlands - I spent a few wonderful hours with a fellow Dutch polymer clayer earlier this month who is very keen to establish an active polymer clay group in the Netherlands - if you are interested in joining then please let me have your contact details.

I am very keen to establish some "partner buddy" groups across the International polymer world. Perhaps your group / guild has something to offer which is sought after by another group? Why not drop me a line with your news? Are you a member of a well established group who would be interested in supporting a new group in a different corner of the world? Why not let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Voila! International Website
For dreamers over the rainbow...
Do you feel you're chasing your muse all by your lonesome? Do you want more than classroom techniques? Are you looking for help to embrace art as an outlet for self-expression?

Voila! is a Europe-based community website for the world's polymeristas. And, with inspiration from Europe's cultural heritage, Voila! will help members take their work to new artistic heights. Tutorials packed with fantastic photos explain clearly how elements like lines, forms, and colours affect us emotionally, so that you can express your artistic vision and appreciate the work of others. This is definitely not just another Internet forum.

Healthy competition will help you explore your creativity with skillful and constructive judging by guest artists as well as members of Voila!

Voila! is currently in its pilot phase and will launch in the Autumn of 2009 with a variety of learning resources. The first competition will take place soon thereafter.
If you are interested in learning more about this exciting new home for polymer artists, email me at voila!@allovercreation.net

Synergy II Request for Proposals
Synergy II: Exploring Connections

The IPCA Conference Synergy II: Exploring Connections is being planned for Baltimore, Maryland in 2010.  Synergy II promises to be just as dynamic as the original, with a similar seminar format for presentations.

The Request for Proposals form was posted to the website and an announcement was emailed to all members, so be sure to keep an eye out for it.  Deadline for proposal submissions is June 15, 2009.

You may also contact the IPCA for further information.

Retreat 2009 Registration Continues!

IPCA Retreat 2009 attendees will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from PolymerCAFÈ and Art Jewelery Magazine and Kalmbach Books.  New and experienced polymer clay artists are strongly encouraged to bring project samples and book outlines with them to the Retreat. Polyform Products is also seeking project ideas from artists in attendance. There will also be shopping from our vendors and the chance to see the new DREAM Machine from Polymer Clay Express in action.

The 2009 Retreat Committee and IPCA Board are committed to holding this event, and now there is no time like the present to register for the Retreat! Click here to read more about the Retreat or go directly to the Registration form and sign up today.

The upcoming exhibit, "Sculpting Color: Works in Polymer Clay" at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA is intended to educate people about polymer clay as well as blow them away with masterful works made in it. Kathleen Dustin, the curator, needs a display board describing step-by-step cane construction of a basic cane, such as a nice flower. She'd also like to include a description of Skinner blend construction. Her thought is to have actual baked pieces of these at various stages mounted on foam core.

Kathleen is inviting individual polymer artists or guilds to do this for the exhibit. Some of you may have already made such a thing for your own show/sales and could lend it for the exhibit. The artist would receive recognition in the exhibit and shipping will be paid for. The exhibit opens August 8, 2009 so there is plenty of time to make it.  Please email Kathleen if you would like to participate.

We would like to hear from artists who create with polymer clay,
either wearables like jewelry or non-wearables, and who would like
to have their work featured on either www.jewelryandbeading.com or
www.blisstree.com this spring.  Jewelry&Beading and Blisstree are
both network blogs with very large readerships.  Please send your
artist statement of one to three paragraphs, and up to three images
(72dpi res) of your work, along with a link to your site.  Please
put "polymer clay artist" in the subject line. Email: cyndi@b5Media.com.

For Your Information
According to the recent Craft Emergency Relief Fund Business Insurance Survey a high percentage of craft artists mistakenly believe that the structure that they work in and/or their business property is covered by their homeowner's insurance. Unless you have negotiated for a special endorsement (rider), homeowner's insurance normally covers only about $2,500 for a home office--money intended for a desk, file cabinets and computers, but not buildings used for business purposes.  Read your insurance policy, talk to your insurance agent, and consider purchasing a rider on your homeowner's insurance, an "in-home business" policy, or a business owner's plan (BOP). For more information contact CERF
