Greetings!

We know we sent you this information in our March issue of the "Hearthside Update", but we want to make sure everyone reads this information.  I am not trying to scare you, but this is a very important subject that has been overlooked.  If you have any questions, you can go to the EPA's website at http://www.epa.gov/opptintr/lead.

Thank you and happy selling,

LEAD ............ ?

EPA logoWhat am I talking about?  Well, the long and short of it is the EPA has put forth new regulations that all contractors who do work in houses built before 1978 must now be certified in the EPA's Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Program (RRP Program).  ALL CONTRACTORS IN ALL STATES AND TERRITORIES MUST BE CERTIFIED.  In general, if you remodel any part of an interior of a house and you disturb more than six (6) square feet, or more than twenty (20) square feet on the exterior, you MUST follow guidelines put forth by the EPA and you MUST be certified.
WHEN DOES THIS GO INTO EFFECT?

  APRIL 22, 2010!!!

The Big Question: "How do I get certified?"
Answer:  You take the 8-hour course and you are good for the next 5 years!

Question:  "Where can I get trained?"
Answer:  You can follow this link to the EPA's website and call one of the training centers near you.  The website is www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/trainingproviders.htm.
What is MAHPBA doing to help you?

MAHPBA has set up two trainings in the Mid-Atlantic region

The first is Tuesday, April 6th, at Criterion Laboratories, Inc., in Bensalem, PA.  You can click here to get information and sign up for this event.

The second is Tuesday, June 15th at the Lancaster Host Resort right after the Annual Meeting.  Click here for information and to sign up for this event.
What Happens If I Do Nothing?

That is a very good question.  The fine for not complying with the regulations is a little on the steep side - how about a fine of $32,500?  That is not a typo, it is $32,500 per day.  I'm not sure about you, but not many companies can handle that kind of fine and still survive.  This fine can easily be averted by just sending your installers to the certification class.  Most classes are running around $250-$300.  So what is the saving to you by getting certified?  Looks to me to be a $32,300 savings!
