  • Greetings!

Although the holiday season usually brings joy, it is sad to bid farewell to some long-time MAHPBA Board Members. Ken Trail and Pat Ryan joined the board together when it first formed in 2000. Ken served as president for two years (2000 - 2001) and Pat was also president for two years (2004-2005). Both have also served on numerous committees. We will miss their "historic perspective" as well as their comaraderie and friendship and wish them the best in the future. We also must say "goodbye and good luck" to Matt Goense who has served on the Education and Nominating committees these past two years.

From the MAHPBA Staff: Holly, Lynda, Joan, Stephanie and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

As we wrap up what has been quite a challening year, it seems to me that most of us reading this newsletter have weathered the storms, from economic pressure and industry uncertainty to a climate that has not been very hearth friendly. These are the things we couldn't control. Some of the things that we were able to manage were our businesses, our expenses, and most importantly our attitudes.

Might you be interested in becoming a MAHPBA NFI Instructor? MAHPBA holds NFI certifications in 3-to-5 different locations each year. The NFI Review Course is designed to help students prepare for their exam. Students are expected to have read and studied the reference manual before attending a review course. Instructors are provided with a PowerPoint presentation for the review course, which begins at 8AM and ends at approximately 2:30PM. MAHPBA pays you a stipend for the day, mileage to and from the hotel, your meals and your hotel room, if necessary. Please contact Carl Larkin at hearthcarl@verizon.net with any questions.

    Workers Compensation 101
    For members only

Hearth, Patio and Barbecue businesses have workers compensation exposures that may differ from those of a standard retailer. In store (premises) and field (installation and service work) exposures normally present challenges to insurance carriers. Following are some thoughts to help you better understand and manage your workers compensation insurance.

Just a quick word from the Education Commitee! We finished the year with 94 NFI exams taken in 2009 - that was the same number in 2008! Keeping in mind what kind of year this has been, I'm not at all disappointed. Looking forward is always the way to go when you have a goal in mind. My goal for 2010 is to have even better-attended NFI sessions than we have had in the past. We have chosen the dates and locations for 2010 which are listed on our Website!
