Binational Health Week 2009 - October 3rd-17th!!
Binational Health Week (BHW) is an annual week-long series of
health-promotion and health-education activities geared toward the most
vulnerable and difficult to reach migrants and immigrants from Mexico
and Central America, but benefits underserved Latinos regardless of
their national origin and their communities of origin. Outside of Santa
Cruz County, this year, BHW will take place October 3-17, 2009 in 40
states in the U.S. and 3 provinces in Canada, with the participation of
the consular networks of the seven participating countries.
Also, the Mexican states with high rates of migration will be
implementing activities. During Binational Health Week, a national
campaign will take place to promote awareness among the Latino
community on the topics of prevention of addictions, nutrition,
prevention of strokes, and living green.

Jóvenes SANOS youth are working with various Watsonville schools and in association with Driscolls Strawberries Associates Inc.to provide a healthy after school snack to students on campus.

School Garden Program promotes sound science, food
safety, nutrition, and education in order to create healthy farms, individuals,
and communities. The Foundation's California School Garden Program provides
grants of up to $1,500 to maintain gardens at K-12 schools throughout the
state. Selected programs also receive seeds, an irrigation system, and
additional teacher resources. Funded garden programs must focus on fruits and
vegetables and provide elements of nutrition education. Priority is given to
programs that have students involved in planning, planting, harvesting, etc.
The fall application deadline for the California program is November 15, 2009.

Love Your Veggies Grant Program Deadline: November 6, 2009The makers of Hidden Valley
Salad Dressings are now accepting applications for the 2009-10 Love Your Veggies grant program. The purpose of the program is to help schools
execute innovative programs that will increase the access to, and consumption of,

CATCH K-5 Program - FREE TRAINING!
The Coordinated Health Institute
Online Training Campus
has been launched and it is currently offering the CATCH K-5 Program
training for free. This online course offered by the CHI Campus takes
you through the
entire program and provides information on how to get this after-school
version of CATCH up and running in your community. The modules cover
everything from how to use the materials as well as video
demonstrations on how to work with the kids in your program. This
course is a must for those organizations who use CKC in their
after-school or school environment. For more information on this course

Youths offered grants to fight obesity
UnitedHealth
Group is offering grants of up to $1,000 to young people in California
to learn about childhood obesity, designing programs to address it and
implementing the programs in their communities. Schools and youth-focused, community center-based programs are eligible. To obtain an application, visit. ysa.org
and click on the "UnitedHealth HEROES" link under "Support -- Get
Funding" or the "UnitedHealth HEROES" link under "What's New." Applications
must be submitted online before midnight Thursday, Oct. 22. Grant
recipients will be notified in December and January.
Mantis Awards
Deadline: March 1,
2010
Each year, Mantis provides
the Mantis Awards for charitable and educational garden
projects that serve to improve the quality of life for youth and community
members. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to turn slim resources into
bountiful gardens that increase access to nutritious foods and provide
education on the importance of nutrition.

The National Gardening Association and The Home Depot provide Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations
with child-centered garden programs.
