Here is an example of a commonly asked question: How much of my gift to United Way goes to pay operating expenses? During the most recent fiscal year (2008-2009), our core operating expenses were 12%. (unaudited). In the non-profit world, this is considered to be extremely low. The United Way of Santa Cruz County is a 4-star (exceptional) steward as rated for operational efficiencies by national watchdog Charity Navigator.
Our first fall fruit stand got off to a great start in mid September. We were at 3 school campuses
Mintie White Elementary, E.A. Hall Middle and Watsonville High and we sold out
of all the fruit. We provided a fresh,
healthy after school snack to over 180 students in Watsonville.
This fall we decided to collaborate with CAFF's youth
group True Farmer Invasion (TFI) and they dressed up as produce, it was a
blast.
With a coordinated advocacy approach from United Ways of
California, combined with the voices of concerned citizens, the
legislature and governor listened.
On September 22nd, 2009 Governor Schwarzenegger signed
legislation that prevents nearly 700,000 children from losing their
Healthy Families health insurance coverage this year.
Local Wells Fargo employees donned LIVE UNITED tees and volunteered at several venues during the week of September 7th. Those above are spent a few hours at Loaves and Fishes. THANKS WELLS FARGO!
