Santa Cruz approves smoking ban for Pacific Avenue, Beach Street, West Cliff Drive
City leaders on Tuesday unanimously approved a smoking ban along Pacific Avenue, Beach Street and West Cliff Drive, among other spots, and agreed to consider a new fee on cigarette sales in the near future. "Our kids are picking up cigarette butts, kids are breathing cigarette smoke and it doesn't encourage a family atmosphere," said Councilman Ryan Coonerty, who proposed the ban along with Councilmen Mike Rotkin and Don Lane at the prompting of many in town.

Cook County takes blow in Tax hike Consumers are aware of high prices for their favorite treats whether it is candy, soft drinks, or alcohol. But are they aware that Cook County may take the bigger blow? The Illinois sales tax has gone up to help pay for a massive project to build roads and schools. This increase will hit many stores in the Cook County area that relies on people who are already in an economic slump. Bars and many other places will have to pass the increased price of their products to the consumer just to make it in this recession.

| New Report on Binge Drinking:

Binge Drinkers Often Drive Drunk, Researchers Say
A study of 14,000 binge drinkers found that 12 percent admitted driving after their most recent episode of heavy alcohol consumption, the Associated Press reported Sept. 1. Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also found that about half of those who drove drunk did so within two hours of consuming seven or more drinks, and that about a quarter drove after downing 10 drinks or more. Applications for two-year fellowships are now being accepted by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). Chosen fellows will work with state, community and local agencies to improve their hands-on skills and knowledge, with the goal of developing a cadre of "highly competent substance-abuse prevention professionals," according to CSAP.
