Get Real Food In Schools - National Day of Action

Join Slow Foods Santa Cruz and other organizations at San Lorenzo Park on Labor Day for an "Eat In".  Eat, share ideas and celebrate good, clean and fair food for kids in schools.  Nationwide these eat ins are happening on Labor Day to send a clear message to our Nation's leaders that it's time to provide our children with real food at our schools!

What:  A FREE day of physical activity training, resource learning, idea sparking, mission inspiring, nutrition experimenting FUN.

When:  Thursday, September 10th, 2009, from 8:00 - 3:30

Where:  The Salinas YMCA, 117 Clay Street, Salinas, CA 93901
Who:  Teachers, Program Coordinators, After School Staff, Coaches, Youth Group Leaders, Parks, Recreation and city/county youth group volunteers and paid staff, parent volunteers.
Why:  To make you the best at what you do - bringing healthy living through physical activity and healthy eating to everyone you serve.


Youths offered grants to fight obesity


UnitedHealth Group is offering grants of up to $1,000 to young people in California to learn about childhood obesity, designing programs to address it and implementing the programs in their communities.
Schools and youth-focused, community center-based programs are eligible.

To obtain an application, visit. ysa.org and click on the "UnitedHealth HEROES" link under "Support -- Get Funding" or the "UnitedHealth HEROES" link under "What's New."

Applications must be submitted online before midnight Thursday, Oct. 22. Grant recipients will be notified in December and January.


Mantis Awards 

Deadline: March 1, 2010

Each year, Mantis provides the Mantis Awards for charitable and educational garden projects that serve to improve the quality of life for youth and community members. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to turn slim resources into bountiful gardens that increase access to nutritious foods and provide education on the importance of nutrition.



2010 Youth Garden Grants Program


The National Gardening Association and The Home Depot provide Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs.

A new study by consumer research group NPD examines the popularity of "brown bag" lunches for children and compares the most popular foods brought from home with those served in schools, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Web Site Helps Parents Monitor Children's Food Purchases at School
Schools in many states across the nation have implemented a monitoring system that allows parents to view their child's school food choices and expenses, ABC News reports.

New Online Tool Offers Estimates of Revenue from Taxes on Soft Drinks
The calculator was developed by the Yale University Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity.  In the past decade, states and localities have begun to consider taxing sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs)-including sodas, sports drinks, sweetened tea, fruit drinks and punches-in order to generate revenue, reduce consumption of unhealthy beverages and promote public health. In order to help policy-makers and the general public understand the potential revenue that could be generated by such a tax, the Yale University Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity has released a Revenue Calculator for Soft Drink Taxes. 

Report Suggests Unsafe Neighborhood Increases Likelihood of Overweight Among Urban Teens
A study published in the online journal Public Health suggests that adolescents who live in an urban neighborhood that feels unsafe may be more likely to be overweight, Reuters reports.

Report Suggests Most Parents Dissatisfied with Availability of Healthy Food Choices at Child's School
In a recent survey by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, only one-third of parents gave their children's public schools an "A" grade for offering healthy food choices, according to AnnArbor.com.

Healthy Schools Honored by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation

President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation, joined American Heart Association President Clyde Yancy, M.D., and RWJF President and CEO Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., at the Fourth Annual Healthy Schools Program Forum in New York to honor 114 schools from across the nation that are transforming themselves into healthier places for students to learn and staff to work.

Nearly one in three children and adolescents in the United States is obese or overweight. In response to this epidemic, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation established the Healthy Schools Program to help schools develop and implement policies and practices to promote healthy eating and increase physical activity.
