Announcement:
Know any Community Heroes?
|
|
The form to nominate a Community Hero for 2009 is now available at www.unitedwaysc.org and can be submitted via email, fax or hard copy). The deadline for nominations is, July 10th, 2009. The United Way's Community Assessment Project (CAP) has set 19 community goals to make Santa Cruz County residents safer, healthier and more politically involved. Now our non-profit wants to honor some of the people that are pushing the county forward. These persons don't have to have fancy titles or big paychecks; they simply have to be doing some good in our community. "It is so inspiring to celebrate the people who are making a positive difference in our county," said Mary Lou Goeke, Executive Director of United Way of Santa Cruz County. "Community Goals are our collective aspirations for the future. But Community Heroes are the people who make that future come true." Selected Community Heroes will be recognized in the Community Assessment Project's annual report, which is distributed countywide. The CAP focuses on six general areas: economy, education, health, natural environment, public safety and social environment. Please see the website for a complete list of goals.

Recognize your Employer for Being Family Friendly!
United Way of Santa Cruz County's Success By 6 and the Santa Cruz County Breastfeeding Coalition announce: The Family Friendly Employer Awards Capitola, CA - June 4, 2009 Santa Cruz County parents recognize that balancing work and family is a continuous challenge. United Way of Santa Cruz County's Success By 6 program and the Santa Cruz County Breastfeeding Coalition are announcing the Family Friendly Employer Awards, which aim to recognize employers who support employees in their roles as parents. Success By 6 is a United Way Initiative whose mission is "to mobilize all segments of the community to work in partnership so as to ensure that all children enter kindergarten healthy, well-adjusted and able to learn." The Santa Cruz County Breastfeeding Coalition is committed to optimizing the health of mothers and babies by encouraging breastfeeding friendly attitudes, policies, and images in the community, as well as promoting breastfeeding education and supportive practices among women and their families, health professionals and the community. There are many ways for employers to support parents that are beneficial to both parties. No-cost and low-cost policies can pay off big time for employers by promoting employee loyalty, raising job satisfaction, improving attendance and reducing stress on the job. Examples of Family Friendly Workplace policies include: flex-time, extended break time for pumping breast milk, sick time for children's illnesses, referral source for child-related help, child-friendly workplace, and access to health insurance options for children. Some of our previous awards winners included Families in Transition, Spa Fitness, Hutchinson & Bloodgood, Walnut Avenue Women's Center, Community Bridges, Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center and Bay Federal Credit Union. Nomination forms are being released this week! Please visit http://www.unitedwaysc.org/sb6.shtml to complete a nomination form. The winners will be announced in conjunction with Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August. Nominations must come from employees who are parents and not owners of companies. The Family Friendly Workplace Awards program media contact is Kymberly Lacrosse, United Way of Santa Cruz County, (831)- 465-2212.
