New Report Recommends School Consolidation

A new report suggests Kansas school districts could save millions of taxpayer dollars through consolidations.

Kansas now has 293 school districts. The report released Monday by the Legislative Division of Post Audit suggests two ways to reduce that number to either 266 or 152.

Find out what the two suggested ways are

Legislature Set To Approve Funding Moves To Support Services

State budget problems continue to mount in Kansas. The state Senate gave approval last week to move funds from the transportation budget to the general fund to allow for the funding of social services and education.

The state house of representatives is set to vote on making that money move this week. If it passes, the budget would balance. If it doesn't, many say it would cause serious problems for social service programs and education.

Consolidation-The Dirty "C" Word

It appears there is no relief in the short-term for the financial woes that schools in Kansas and many other states are feeling. An article in today's edition of The Hutchinson News summarizes the results of last year's legislative post-audit. In a nutshell, it points to School Consolidation as a viable means for saving money. In fact, the report has two scenarios-one would reduce the number of districts in Kansas from 293 down to 266 districts. The other scenario would reduce the number of districts to 152.

Black History Month resources and lesson plans

Finding Black History Month lesson plans and teaching resources is not that tough. Finding good ones . . . a bit more difficult.

So I've spent some time over the last few days, trying to sift through the hundreds of places that are posting Black History Month materials. And I think I've come up with a pretty good list. The stuff from the National Archives and the Library of Congress seems especially good.
games, no field trips scheduled. So you're good, right?

Math Made Fun

Michelle's Math Idea of the Week:
What Does It Mean To Know Math?

I just received a new book by Van Walle.  Van Walle works are based on developmental thinking and learning theories.  I love his work because it discusses both sides of the "math coin".  Many people believe math is about memorizing facts, rules, and procedures.  Although this is one part, or one side, of the math coin, it does not take into account the other side "mathematical thinking and reasoning".  Many people do not even realize that there are two sides of the coin.  Why?  Think back to how we all learned math in school.  The phrase, "We don't know what we don't know.", is so true.  If a person has never been exposed to thinking about math as thinking, reasoning, and problem solving, our lenses, which we view math is very narrow.
