September 2010
Greetings Friends,

Where did the summer go? Your POP group has had a busy few months. In this newsletter please read about the Power of the Purse Luncheon held on July 20 at the
Blowing Rock Country Club. I would have to summarize all the compliments received by simply stating the highest level of positive energy was created. Many of our goals were met: attendance was very good, there was great community support, the entertainment was of New York Metropolitan quality, new volunteers were signed, funding level increased, and everyone left the event with a lighter
spring in their steps and a song in their hearts.

Also in this issue, a touching memorial to Eleanor Elizabeth Dorman, information about exciting upcoming events and opportunities to volunteer for community projects, and much more.

Early in July, as POP Luncheon plans were set in motion, Dr. Linda Robinson resigned as chair. Not long after that, Coordinator Lindsay Miller resigned effective July 30. We reeled for a moment, stumbled a bit, "we picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off and started all over again," just like the song says. With strong leadership from your Advisory Council and a "deep bench" of talent and skill, our work carried on with fervor and zeal - perhaps at a bit slower pace (thus the lateness for the newsletter).

I remember as a child, when I whined at an assigned task or work overload, my father would say, "Pinky, when the going gets tough the tough get going." That is exactly what your leadership team has done; they are pulling double duty so that the work IS getting done during this transition. My deep respect and gratitude goes to the members of the Advisory Council and the POP Committee for their hard work and dedication to the Organization, its Mission and to each other. AC members you are a great team!!

Go out now and enjoy this beautiful season. Take a mountain bike ride or hike,
breathe deeply this cool, fresh mountain air, and be thankful for your many
blessings. While you are there, think about when and how you want to become
more involved with POP.

Sincerely,

Margaret "Pinky" Hayden, Acting Chair

Just for You - Opportunity Awaits!

Volunteer opportunities abound for those who want to help women in need. There truly is something for everyone, so get in touch with one of our Advisory Council members today!

If you want to feel good about yourself and your organization then contact Mary Jo Grubbs and volunteer for one of the many community projects she has planned. Rebecca Moore has plenty of fun jobs from the membership committee. Jenny Miller will value your assistance on the Fun Rising, oh, excuse me, I meant FUND raising committee. Organizing a POP party (after hours) can be a way to meet new friends. If you want to help us DISTRIBUTE funds and learn about the needs in our community first-hand, contact Jennifer Kearse. Or, if you like writing, Teri Wiggans on the Publicity Committee will welcome you with a smile. Run, run, run from Kim Kincaid - she will put you to work crunching numbers on the Finance Committee - although, if you like crunching numbers contact Kim. Now, if you just don't know what you want, but you want to volunteer, then contact Acting Chair Pinky Hayden or Secretary Jill Huffman and we will guide you to a well-fitted area of interest. Please, let us hear from you soon. You will be greeted with enthusiasm and cheerfulness.

Eleanor Elizabeth Dorman
Eleanor Elizabeth. Dorman was a woman who overcame many obstacles in her life, not unlike many of the women supported by Power of the Purse. In 2006, she was sentenced to 24-29 months in the Department of Corrections for trafficing a substance called methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as ecstasy. The following information is adapted from an essay she wrote September 19, 2006 called "Free on the Inside."

Host a POP Party
By Teri Wiggans

By hosting a Power of the Purse (POP) Party, you are creating an opportunity for women from the High Country to gather together and learn about service to other women who are moving toward self-sufficiency and need our support in time, talent or treasures.

The party structure is by your own design. The ones I have attended have been fun and provide a chance to meet new people and learn about all of the projects in our community.

The Membership Committee of the High Country Women's Fund (HCWF) has a packet available that provides a suggested time outline, materials available to distribute, and list of volunteer speakers that are willing to share their knowledge and/or experience as a recipient of HCWF support.

Please contact Membership Chair Rececca Moore, or call 828-265-4007 to find out more. We thank you.
Share the Warmth

Winter is coming and now is the time to share our love and warmth with community women in need! Please
join the HCWF and the Sisterhood of the Temple in a coat and food drive September 22nd and 23rd. Items needed include:
  • Gently used winter coats and jackets, hats, boots and gloves
  • Pantry items, canned goods, dinner foods, toiletries, and frozen food
Please drop off all items at the Hunger and Health Coalition on the 22nd so we may distribute them to our community families on the 23rd. If you have some free time, we would welcome volunteers both days to sort and distribute these items. The Hunger and Health Coalition is located off of Bamboo Road at 141 Health Center Drive in Boone. Their phone number is 828-262-1628. If you are unable to bring food next week, please know that your food items are always welcome and needed everyday of the year.

Remember, we can make a big difference in the lives of our community families here in the High Country!

Avery County Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring a "Women Build" on October 7 & 9 near Elk Park. The Milford Meadows subdivision now has six houses completed and all of them have had women involved in painting rooms, driving nails and even putting on siding. Most participants have been on-the-job learners, and have had a lot of fun and fellowship while working. Please contact the Habitat for Humanity office at 828-733-1909 for more information and directions to Milford Meadows.
