April 2010 |

Greetings, High Country Women!
April has been
a wonderful and busy month for HCWF. We distributed our 2009 Annual
Review to over 1,500 women in the High Country. If you did not receive one, let me know and I'll send one
your way! With YOUR help we have collected many wonderful donations for the
upcoming Mother's Day POP Shoppe. In addition, we are excited about
several upcoming events hosted by our partner agencies (Midnight at the Oasis
and Hearts of Hospitality Ball). The Power of the Purse Luncheon is RETUNING
this upcoming July 20, 2010; plus our social meeting for our Circle of Friends
and Director's Circle members will be held this Wednesday! There are so many
ways to get in involved with women in need; many of them are listed in this
newsletter!
Sincerely,
Lindsay Miller, Coordinator

Mother's Day "POP" Shoppe Service Project
| | Saturday, May 8, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
at the Unique Boutique
Thank you to so many of you caring women who have already donated some of your
gently used professional clothing for the upcoming "POP" Shoppe. Your donations
will make this day one to remember. We are still in need of a few volunteers
for the week of May 3 to collect gift items (lotions, picture frames, jewelry,
etc.) that children can give to their moms for Mother's Day. We will also have
drinks, water and snacks to be served at the event.
On the day of the event, (May 8) we will need volunteers to help the women and
children choose clothing, help the children pick a gift and wrap it for their
moms, as well as interact and play with the children while their mothers shop
in the Unique Boutique.
This is a perfect way to reach out to women in our community.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email Mary Jo Grubbs, Community
Outreach Chair, at mar0817@aol.com or call
her at 295-5070. We hope to see you there!

Your Giving Circle at work - Real women; Real Help
| Julie* participated in the
Believing Is Seeing Empowerment Program last summer. This is a program that has
been supported by the HCWF for the past two summers. She was recently
interviewed and expressed how the program has made a difference in her life. In June 2009, right before the program started in July, Julie had separated
from her husband. She and her 4 year old daughter moved in with a friend
who was willing to share her apartment. There was a great deal of stress from
many directions. She had challenges with her husband providing financial and
emotional support for her daughter. When she began searching for community
support, now as a single mom, the agencies were reluctant to give her financial
aid since her finances with her husband had been sufficient. Without his
financial support, she was considered to be below the poverty level. Julie was experiencing insomnia sleeping only three hours per night. She had
panic attacks every other day and was given anti-anxiety medication. Her
daughter was shuffled back and forth between both of her parents every other
night. In her words, she was "at her wit's end." The Believing Is Seeing Program provided Julie with techniques that helped
reduce her stress level, enabled her to communicate better, and to connect with
other women who were facing many of the same or even more difficult problems. She
felt less isolated and grateful that she had fewer challenges than others. Julie is just completing her first year of community college where she has a
double major in science and nursing. She's doing very well academically and
loves her clinical work. She loves caring for people and being a patient advocate.
She feels that nursing is where she is supposed to be and that it is a great
fit. Her long term goals include graduate school. Julie has received increased support from her community and friends which has
meant a lot to her since she has no family in the immediate area. Julie has
learned how to cope with day-to-day stresses with decreased anxiety and is no
longer taking anti-anxiety medication. She is sleeping eight hours per night
with only rare insomnia. Julie uses newfound communication tools by sharing her feelings immediately
rather than bottling them up. She uses another technique to turn situations
around from anger and fear into love and understanding. She describes it as
being able to comfort someone else so that they can help her better. Her life
is flowing and she is very grateful for being just where she is in life. We
celebrate with Julie and all that she shares with our community.
