Vol. 2, Issue 3
March 2010

Greetings, High Country Women!

Spring looks to be making its way into our days, and that means it's time to get out and do something! We have a lot of information in this month's newsletter offering ways to get involved with our cause. Please consider donating your time, talents or treasures to any one of the ways we are helping women on their journey to self-sufficiency. You can donate any amount of volunteer time -  whether it is one hour or 40 hours. We are thrilled to have so many caring women involved with us; and we are looking forward to seeing you this Spring!

Thank you,

Lindsay Miller, Coordinator

Power of the Purse Luncheon

Save the date! July 20, 2010

High Country Women's Fund is hosting our 4th Power of the Purse Luncheon. We are excited to bring our mission back to the Blowing Rock County Club, the site where the very first Power of the Purse Luncheon was held back in 2006! We feel it is the perfect time to return to our roots and reflect on just why it is that we work so hard to do what we do.

Now, along with this exciting news...WE NEED YOU! We are inviting volunteers to assist with various aspects that will make this event a memorable reality. Would you like to volunteer on one of our 10 committees? If you can give a couple of hours a week or a couple of hours a month or even more, your help will be appreciated! We could use assistance in the following areas: invitations; publicity; decorations; raffle baskets; seating/registration; program development; sponsorships; graphic design and web design.

Where do YOU fit in? Give us a call!

Mother's Day "POP" Shoppe Service Project
Saturday, May 8, 10 am - 2 pm at the Unique Boutique

Clothing and Household Items

In preparation for the May 8, 2010 Mother's Day POP Shoppe, we are collecting clothing and household items. Please gather your gently used spring and summer clothing for young women and their families. Professional clothing for young women will be greatly appreciated; as participants will be able to select items to  wear for job interviews. Household items including kitchen wares, linens, towels, furniture, as well as baby items are also welcome.

These donations can be dropped off at:
Unique Boutique, 196 Perkinsville Drive in Boone behind Mike's Inland Seafood.
Doncaster Outlet at Shadowline Shopping Center in Boone.
Heritage Realty at 176 Shawneehaw Ave. in Banner Elk.
Please designate all items for the Mother's Day POP Shoppe.

Volunteers

We will need volunteers for the week of May 3 to collect gift items (lotions, picture frames, jewelry, etc.) that children can give to their mom's for Mother's Day. We will also be gathering drinks, water, and snacks to be served at the event.

On the day of the event, May 8, we will need volunteers to help the women and children choose clothing, help the children pick a gift and wrap it for their moms, as well as, interact and play with the children while their mothers shop in the Unique Boutique.

All the women who have volunteered for the past two years have had a great time! The joy on the children's faces when they get to pick a gift for their mother is priceless.

It is a perfect way to reach out to women in our community. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Mary Jo Grubbs, Community Outreach Chair, at mar0817@aol.com or call her at 295-5070.

Believing is Seeing
Thursdays, July 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 5-7 pm

Volunteers have appreciated the opportunity of serving meals and tending to the participants' children during the previous two Believing is Seeing programs offered. These women have been supported by High Country United Way funding through various community programs. HCWF steps in and fills the gap from what our local agencies can provide and what the women need to maintain a healthy and empowered life. The program is structured to surround the participants in a safe and loving environment so that they may learn new skills that build confidence and strength.

We are seeking volunteers to prepare food and provide child care while the program is in session at the Children's Playhouse.
Please email Lindsay Miller if you would like to help out.

Believing is Seeing 2008
"POP" Parties - An inside look

On Saturday, March 6, 2010, Bobbi Taylor and Rosemary Horowitz sponsored a Power of the Purse brunch. Fifteen invited women came together to learn more about what the HCWF does and how they could participate by sharing their time, talents and treasures. Several of our Advisory Committee members attended to meet guests and to convey information.

Our guest speaker was Veronica Brocco, a woman who has been supported in multiple ways through the HCWF over the past two and a half years. After her 14-year marriage collapsed, she made a difficult choice to divorce her husband and take responsibility for her four children. She had to scramble to get her teaching credentials and then search for a job that would support her family.

Marnie Werth from WAMY initially helped Veronica, and then she introduced her to Mary Jo Grubbs, HCWF Community Outreach Chair. Mary Jo immediately took Veronica under her wings encouraging her to be part of the Mother's Day POP Shoppe held at the Unique Boutique. Veronica and her children, along with all the other attendees, were treated royally. The women chose clothing while the children selected a gift, wrapped it and were brimming with pride and eager with anticipation to give it to their moms on Mother's Day.

Veronica related that during her marriage she was caught up in a pattern of negative thoughts, a cycle of pain and fear paralyzing her from moving forward. She had developed the attitude, "I'll never make it. I won't be able to keep a roof over our heads."

Veronica was invited to participate in the first 'Believing Is Seeing' program sponsored by the HCWF where she learned and practiced skills in relaxation, communication and empowerment. She designed her future by creating a vision. Veronica expressed that she learned to be gentle with herself and to be grateful and compassionate towards others. Further, she stated that "she could fill her heart with love and her head with visions of people she loved."

Veronica was invited to the second 'Believing Is Seeing' program the following summer. She realized how much she had accomplished during the past year. She was much more relaxed and confident, as well as less fearful and judgmental. She contributed to the new group with compassion and graciousness. The other participants hung on to every word of wisdom she shared. They valued her authenticity and the strength and courage she exuded.

Veronica is so grateful for the deep and committed investment HCWF has made in her. The individuals who worked with  her not only helped her up, they helped her to live, laugh and love again. Currently, she is a successful math teacher, a responsible and loving parent and has, in turn, been able to give back to her community. She volunteers as a Sunday school teacher for 4th and 5th graders, has spoken at HCWF events and has shared some of her new coping skills and positive attitudes with her own personal network of friends. Veronica emailed a friend recently to share she had been able to give an elderly gentleman food and clothing the same night his home burnt to the ground. The friend replied, "Your email made me realize how happy I am to know you." As Veronica states, "I am entitled to celebrate my successes."

HCWF believes that the women of the High Country deserve this kind of investment. Our investment of time, talent and treasures are not only affecting each individual woman in the program but also radiating out to their children, friends, and communities. Veronica is a beacon of light and love creating a wonderful impact for all of us.

If you would like to participate in any of our service projects or get better acquainted with the HCWF, please contact Lindsay Miller, HCWF Coordinator.
Food for thought...
Women, You Must Learn to Be Warriors
Nancy Wood

Women, you must learn to be warriors
Now when times are dark and our men
Are afraid to tell us what is in their hearts.
There is so much trouble in our land
That it is up to you to decide
Which direction the wind must blow.

Women, you are our tree of life
Just as you were a long time ago
When a man said: carry my seed.
If you go forth from this darkness,
Telling our story of courage and survival,
Then our tree will grow strong with your words.

Women, do not worry about tomorrow.
Even when daylight is long in coming,
The sun remembers its place in the sky.
Take this blue shawl of knowledge and
Wrap it around your daughters, telling them
That women must not be afraid to be warriors.
