February 2010

Greetings, High Country Women!

I hope this posting finds each one of you warm and well. This winter sure has me looking forward to Spring! However, despite the challenges this winter has offered, February has brought HCWF multiple and tremendous opportunities. Check out Carolina Mountain Life for a piece about how HCWF is affecting our community in positive ways. And thanks to those of you who joined us for our "POP After Hours" at Galileo's earlier this month. The warmth, fellowship and smiles were fantastic!
Thank you for your continued involvement enabling HCWF to make a difference in the High Country.

Sincerely,
Lindsay Miller, Coordinator

POP After Hours - A SUCCESS!

What a great night it was for all of us at Galileo's on February 23! Galileo's was a lovely gathering place for women to learn more about HCWF, mingle and meet new people and have fun. This POP After Hours had it all - familiar faces connecting with new faces, commitments for memberships, donations and a joyous atmosphere.

We sincerely thank Anne Dixon, owner of Galileo's, for providing the beautiful space, delicious appetizers and free drinks for individuals who donated paper products for OASIS and professional clothing for our upcoming "Dress for Success" project.

We also highly appreciate Molly, our HCWF intern from Watauga High School. She was a great support helping to set up for the event, taking donations and sharing information.

These events are not only fun, but they afford women involved with HCWF the opportunity to connect with volunteers and learn about the various ways they may choose to take part in the organization. It is wonderful to socialize and connect on issues that touch our community. Additionally, we appreciate that Jennifer Herman, director of OASIS, was at Galileo's and informed many of us about grassroots efforts on how we can most efficiently and effectively assist women with our efforts.

Women helping women overcome barriers to self-sufficiency. Yes, that 's what the High Country Women's Fund is all about! Watch out for upcoming POP After Hours; come - have fun and learn more about HCWF and how it helps strengthen our community.

Professional Women's Closet

Open Your Heart, Open Your Closet

This winter has played havoc for all of our schedules at one time or another. For some of us, the by-products of the harsh winter weather have prevented important progress with ongoing projects. The space we use for our Professional Women's Closet is located in a building that is behind schedule with their renovations. Due to these unforeseen circumstances, HCWF has decided to use the items donated at Galileo's for our May 8th, Mother's Day POP Shoppe service project. All items that have been donated will help make this meaningful event a reality.

Are you saying to yourself that you didn't get a chance to bring an article of clothing to Galileo's? It's NOT TOO LATE! You can bring a professional article of clothing to the Doncaster Outlet in the Shops at Shadowline. We extend heartfelt thanks to Michelle Childers, manager of Doncaster Outlet, for her enthusiasm in assisting us to make this project a success.

Thankfully, many of you have been asking to volunteer, so here is a chance! We still need volunteers for some fun and exciting tasks to make the Mother's Day POP Shoppe happen.

If this could be for you, please email Lindsay Miller or call 828.264.4007 for more information.

Food for Thought...Laugh
by Rachel Snyder from Words of Wisdom for Women

Laugh when it all becomes so ludicrous there's nothing else to do. Laugh big, deep laughs that open up your throat and your lungs and your belly. Laugh alone, laugh in concert with other laughers. At the movies, laugh when no one else laugh and let them wonder what they've missed. Laugh at your own mistakes, your own foibles, your own foolishness. Laugh in the face of fear. Laugh until you cry, laugh until you have a stomachache. Let laughter be your medicine, your companion, your music of joy from within. Laugh in school or at work or in church. Get up and leave the room if you must.  Laugh in public. Bend over laughing, fall to the ground laughing, roll on the floor laughing. Start an entire room laughing, start the whole world laughing. And don't stop until you have the last laugh. She/he who laughs, lives.

Agency Focus
We salute two agencies this month: WeCAN & Volunteer Avery

WeCAN or Watauga Crisis Assistance Network coordinates resources of service agencies and the local faith community to respond to needs to prevent homelessness. In the past, HCWF has helped with car repairs, insurance, payments and fuel, school supplies for nursing students, internet for online classes, utility and housing deposits. To find out more about sharing your time, talent and treasures with WeCan, please contact Jennifer McGee at 264-1237.

Volunteer Avery recruits and matches volunteers with service opportunities focusing on the needy, as well as responds to unmet community needs such as rent, heat and bills. Jane McNeil, coordinator, states that she was able to donate $1,000 given through the Josephine S. Leiser Foundation to help make this past Christmas more enjoyable for many families. She was able to pay the car insurance and electric bill for 3 months for a 60 year-old woman whose husband had recently left her. She also helped a couple living in poverty to pay for their kerosene heat. The husband had just had heart surgery; it was a desperately needed and greatly appreciated gift. Volunteer Avery accepts canned goods, cleaning products, and monetary donations. To find out how you can become involved supporting this agency, please contact Jane McNeil at 737-0718.

Both of these agencies would greatly appreciate your support in this unusually harsh winter of cold, snow and blistery winds.
