January 2010

Happy New Year, High Country Women!

2010 has certainly gotten off to a great start! Our calendar is already filled with many exciting events- all to help women and their families in the High Country. We look forward to continue working with our partner agencies, as well as others in the community who have a mission to help assist individuals their journey to self-sufficiency. Please be sure to periodically check out our website to learn the most up-to-date information on HCWF happenings.

HCWF is proud to introduce our 2010 Advisory Council Members: Linda Robinson, chair; Pinky Hayden, vice chair; Kim Kincaid, treasurer and finance chair; Jill Huffman, secretary; Jenny Miller, ex officio, along with committee chairs Rebecca Moore, Jennifer Kearse, Mary Jo Grubbs, and Teri Wiggans. We are excited for the multitude of skill sets and experiences these women bring to our organization.

Best wishes to each of you in the New Year.
Lindsay Miller, HCWF Coordinator

POP After Hours - Galileo's Bar & Café

Want to learn how to become more involved in the High Country Women's Fund and affect positive change for women and their families in Avery and Watauga Counties? We are holding an event for that very opportunity for those interested on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Galileo's Bar & Café.

We encourage you to come and to bring either a paper product for OASIS or professional spring clothing for the Professional Women's Clothes Closet. HCWF conducts service project - "Dress for Success" - which supports women choosing clothing that increases self confidence while job searching. Your donation at Galileo's entitles you to one free beverage!

The POP event will be lively, educational, fun, and community oriented. HCWF members will be available to share how your time, talent or treasures can make an impact in our community.

Thank you to Anne, the owner, for opening up her doors for such a great cause. Light appetizers will be served to the tune of ways you can make a difference in someone's life that needs it.

Featured Agency: Hospitality House

hh

Hospitality House assists adults and families in homeless situations. They offer shelter, food, counseling and social work coordination to support folks getting back on their feet. It opened in 1985 and has had several expansions over the last few years. This year, HCWF donated $10,000.00 to build a new suite for women and children within a larger building of several suites. The total designation to Hospitality House from HCWF is $40,000, which we are very proud to allocate to them over a four year span. The new building is specialized for families and provides a separate space for a safe and child friendly environment.
