PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY NOTE
 Susan Green
The presentation by Kay King, Program Director at the National Alliance on Mental Illness Minnesota (NAMI) at MASWA's January membership meeting, was an eye-opener for me.  Kay informed that approximately 1 in 4 individuals suffer with a mental health illness; depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc.  Initially, I was surprised by this statistic.  Then, I began to contemplate a trend I have noted (entirely unscientifically) from a professional standpoint.  My rudimentary observation indicates that we had been providing services to an increasing number of clients whose primary diagnosis is related to mental health.   Personally, I began to consider the people I have known whose lives have been significantly and sometimes devastatingly affected by a mental health illness or crisis.  I was no longer surprised by the numbers.

Kay taught us about the many resources offered by NAMI which seek to educate, inform and teach coping skills.  She spoke of the ways in which NAMI offers insight to help individuals living with a mental health diagnosis, and their loved ones, attain a sense of empowerment.  Perhaps most importantly, Kay helped us heighten our collective awareness so that we might more effectively engage in the battle to de-stigmatize mental health illnesses.
