TOPIC: Guardians and Conservators:
Who, What, When, Why and How?
Presenter: Jonathan W. Lips, Attorney at Law
Jon Lips is an attorney practicing in the areas of elder law and estate planning. Prior to forming his firm, Jon served as Vice President of Advocacy and Legal Counsel for Care Providers of Minnesota, a long-term care association where he worked from 2003 through 2008. His experience also includes internships with the Aging and Adult Services division of the Minnesota Department of Human Services, and the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging. Jon is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association's Elder Law Section, and is an active volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association and the Park Nicollet Foundation's St. Louis Park Senior Initiative. Raised in Duluth, Jon attended Georgetown University and the University of Virginia School of Law, and now lives in St. Louis Park with his wife and daughter.
Program Objectives:
- Understand the difference between a guardianship and a conservatorship
- Identify alternatives to guardianship and conservatorship
- List factors relevant to determining if a person is capable of making his or her own decisions
