PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY NOTE

Hello fellow MASWA members!

The heat of summer is upon us.  The sounds of kids playing outside, sprinklers running at all hours, people "testing" fireworks in anticipation of the 4th...I hope you are all finding the time to enjoy all that comes with summer in Minnesota.

As we are trying to stay cool, your MASWA board would like you to enjoy all that MASWA membership has to offer.  MASWA provides opportunities for outstanding networking, referrals for your business, and is looking to do great things in the future.  We have given to several charities the past two years in an effort to give back to the community we live and work in.  We have made an impact on the lives of others with these donations and hope to do even more as our organization progresses and grows in the 21st century.  We have currently initiated a new Board position known as the Community Liaison.  This committee will be doing community outreach to schools and universities in an effort to promote "senior focused careers".  We will also look at how we can better impact the community by supporting legislative action, lobbying for programs that will increase the benefits and quality of life for seniors, and using the media to get our message out.

This is your organization and we encourage you to get active.  If you are interested in serving on a committee, please contact a board member.

Enjoy the summer.

FEATURED BOARD MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Jeri Gort - Education Chair

Linda DebnerJeri Gort, LISW, has her Masters Degree in Social Work from the U of M, (1983), and worked at St. John's Hospital and Home Care in 1983/84 and then worked for over twenty years as a school social worker with Minneapolis school children and their families.  She has worked with pregnant teens, young mothers, children with hearing impairments and children with autism.  In 1996, she raised funds and initiated a non-profit character education program called Best Friends that served over 200 Minneapolis inner city young women over seven years.

In 2007, Jeri switched careers and joined the business that her father began 13 years ago (formerly known as Caring Companions) and currently owns and operates the Hennepin County office of Touching Hearts at Home, providing caregiver services to seniors and people with disabilities.  She is thoroughly enjoying her work with seniors and their families finding creative solutions to enable our clients to live independently for as long as possible.

She's married with three grown children and two grandsons.  She has volunteered in several church ministry programs, including recently spearheading fundraising for a building project for a children's home in the mountains of Andahuaylas, Peru, where a portion of the proceeds from Touching Hearts at Home is given.
