Hello fellow MASWA members!
It's hard to believe it is June already...the garden has been planted and we are ready to sit back and savor the results. With all that is going on this time of year, I want to thank you for your continued membership and commitment to MASWA. The new board will begin meeting this month. I am excited to be working with this talented and dedicated group of senior workers. The new board members will be serving you all in this organization for the next two years and those returning to the board will fulfill the final year of their two year term. I would like to encourage you to seek out members of the board and share your thoughts and ideas with them so that we can best serve you. This is your organization and I am happy to be able to serve you as president for the upcoming years. Please, feel free to contact me with any comments, concerns or suggestions. Peace,

| NEW JOINT COMMITTEE |
|
|
MASWA and SPASWA Community Liaison Committee
The MASWA board is excited to announce the formation of a Community Liaison Committee that will provide outreach and education on the Senior Workers Associations and issues affecting seniors. This is a joint effort with the St. Paul Area Senior Workers. We believe in the value and integrity of our associations, and want to inform and educate individuals in the greater community about how they can get "plugged in" to our network. The vision of this committee is to generate knowledge of senior issues and create interest and engagement in aging professions. We hope to accomplish this through collaboration with students, professionals, and individuals from minority communities. Georgia Lane, of ElderCare Consultants, is the Committee Chair, and is actively partnering with SPASWA board members Chris Rosenthal and Ellen Bromley. The Community Liaison Committee will collaborate with other groups working on similar initiatives, such as the Eden Prairie Professionals in Aging (EPPIA) group that has recently formed a Community Outreach Committee.
The committee has identified three potential goal areas:
- To reach out to students and develop relationships with universities and community colleges. This would address the need for new senior workers in a variety of professions, and would offer an additional opportunity to engage new members in our organizations.
- To reach out to minority communities. We would like to see greater cultural diversity within our membership that is representative of the communities of older adults we serve. By including individuals from diverse backgrounds, both as members and as leaders, we will become better able to serve seniors from all ethnic backgrounds.
- To serve as a resource to the media. As issues affecting older adults in our community arise, we hope to develop an efficient and organized way to be able to respond and become a recognized resource for the media. We hope to provide a voice of information and advocacy for our association and the seniors we serve.
Finally, we are currently seeking individuals who are interested in serving on this committee. This initiative is in its early planning stages. We would appreciate your help! If you are interested in serving on this committee, please email Georgia Lane at glane@eldercc.us . |
