PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY NOTE

Hello fellow MASWA members!

 Linda Debner
The bad news is, here we are, in the cold, harsh weather of Minnesota in February, hoping the groundhog does not see his shadow. That leads me to the good news ~ only 6-8 weeks until we smell those wonderful spring flowers, watch our grass green up, and start taking our allergy meds again.  You've got to love it!

For those of you who love winter sports, I am envious.  For those who, like me, do not, you will find us in front of the fireplace, cuddled up with the cat and reading a good book.  Now, that's my idea of a great winter sport.

There is a lot to look forward to this year:  We will be posting some Board positions, so if you can give MASWA two years of service on the Board or as a committee member, please contact Joann Sanford, the chair of the Nominating Committee.  We have two great conferences to look forward to.  The Spring Conference will be on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the Reserve in Plymouth, our usual Spring Conference site. The Fall Aging Conference will be held on a Thursday again this year.  The date set aside for the conference is October 29, 2009 at the Earle Browne Heritage Center.  The planning and work has already started on both conferences.  I know both will be outstanding, as they always are.

I will look forward to seeing all of you at the membership meeting this month.  Dianne Bartels, R.N., M.A., PhD, the Associate Director at the Center for Bioethics, University of Minnesota, will be presenting on "Ethics at the End-of-Life".  She is a wonderful speaker and a wealth of information.

FEATURED BOARD MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Georgia Lane - Historian member of month
My name is Georgia Lane and I have been serving as the Historian on the MASWA board since May 2007.  I have found this to be a worthwhile experience and enjoy the opportunity it provides for me to network and establish relationships with an amazing group of Senior Workers!

I graduated from the College of St. Benedict in 2002 with BA in Sociology.  After college, I joined the AmeriCorps and worked with the homeless population in Los Angeles for one year. I migrated back to Minnesota and worked temporarily for United Way of Central Minnesota as a Campaign Consultant.  Eventually I settled in Minneapolis and worked as an Employment Counselor in Welfare-to-Work programs for 2 ½ years.

I discovered my niche working with seniors while completing my Masters in Social Work at the University of Minnesota.  As part of my graduate work, I completed an internship at the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging, where I worked with the Early Dementia Identification Project and Senior Nutrition Programs.  I also worked part-time with Catholic Eldercare and gained experience working 1:1 with seniors in an Assisted Living Facility.

Since October of 2007, I have worked as Care Manager and Marketing Coordinator at ElderCare Consultants, which is a Geriatric Care Management company that specializes in working with seniors with dementia and/or mental illness.  From July '08 through January '09, I have also been involved with Presbyterian Homes' CNA apprenticeship training. I assisted in developing curriculum and teaching CNAs skills that enable them to implement resident centered care.

I live with my husband in South Minneapolis, where we thoroughly enjoy our lives as "DINKS" (Dual-Income-No-Kids).  In my spare time I enjoy yoga, cooking, reading, and spending time outdoors.
