SPOTLIGHT ON - Celebrating EM Women of Worth 2011

WOW judges and winners 2011
Women of Worth 2011

As emda's Board member Champion for Women's Enterprise who helped found the annual Women in Business conference, Women's Ambassadors and the Women of Worth Awards it has been my pleasure to see all go from strength to strength. In the process I've met some wonderful people. Laura-Jane Ranby and Rebecca with her team at KC Jones came up trumps again with a fabulous event. I was delighted to join this year's line up for the photo session and congratulate all involved.

East Midlands Business Woman of the Year, is Derbyshire business woman Lian Britchford whose rapidly growing print solutions business Encompass has built up a turnover of almost 5 million in just four years. Runners up are Lindsay Nearn of Flying Hire in Lincoln and Maninder Thakar of B-Fly Limited, Derby.

Small Business of the Year is Nottingham based Emily Bendell, owner of BlueBella Ltd, a company retailing sensual products aimed at the 'Sex in the City' generation. Runners up are: Lynne Montgomery the founder of Scented Willow, Ripley and Hannah MacLeod, Coulson Macleod, Northamptonshire.

Most Innovative Business of the Year Lorna Taylor, Jolly Back Enterprises Ltd. Runners up are: Amanda Waring the founder of Nottingham based Mama Jewels and Di Mayze of Bus 94 Ltd, the Nottingham based creator of BuggyTug. More....  back to top...

SPOTLIGHT - Women of Worth Most Innovative Business 2011 Lorna Taylor, founder of Jolly Back Enterprises. It's amazing how winners levitate towards each other, some mysterious force of attraction? I had gone to sit with Lorna at WIB conference without even knowing that she was in this year's finalists. We're going to hear a lot more about Lorna and her innovations. Former paediatric

physiotherapist Lorna invented an ergonomic chair designed for adults such as teachers who work at low heights with children. In just over a

year, Lorna, who has three small children, has

designed and brought the product to market.

The chair, manufactured in Northamptonshire, sold by a network of distributors covering the UK.  Lorna received support from Business Link and Healthcare and Bioscience iNet to get her idea off the ground. She is now developing other products for adults who work with children, and also offering back care consultancy to schools and nurseries. Visit      back to top...

FUNDING- Innovation boost continues for healthcare and bioscience

Stephen Clark of Medilink reminds us of this regional initiative launched three years ago by emda that is providing a major boost to innovation within the region's healthcare and bioscience sector and helps entrepreneurs such as Lorna Taylor and her Jolly Back Enterprises, so if you know a budding inventor or innovator, pass on this information.

Inspired by the East Midlands Innovation Council, developed by emda and managed by Medilink East Midlands, the Healthcare and Bioscience iNet has helped over 500 businesses in the region with their innovation projects. The aim of the iNet is to raise the level of innovation and increase competitiveness through coordinating support to businesses. It brings together regional businesses, universities, NHS researchers and other business support organisations into a network of potential collaborators.  Healthcare and Bioscience iNet or email iNet    Medilink events and information

Tried all the usual routes without success?  Someone objective from outside your business may see what's missing in your approach. Or approaching a different source may help.
