"During hectic snow removal operations, PASSUR OPSnet enabled our operations staff to disseminate real time field condition reports immediately. Airport users received the information via email without fail, every time."

APRIL 2009

Welcome to the April edition of The PASSUR® OPSnet™ Report, developed for the national community of PASSUR OPSnet users.

This month, we talk about improved safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness for all airport users through new automation on PASSUR OPSnet: eNOTAMs and auto-emails. We look at one especially relevant use of that new capability - the coming summer construction season - and how to use PASSUR OPSnet to keep everyone literally "on the same page." And we have the second half of our winter weather wrap-up (this time we visit Boston Logan and New York JFK).

Whether you're an airport, airline, the FAA, cargo operator, or FBO, we're all here to help improve communication and share best practices on creating a more cost effective, safe, and efficient airport operating environment.

Please let us know how we can improve this newsletter by contacting Ron Dunsky, Executive Editor, at rondunsky@passur.com.

Delivering Carriers Improved Safety, Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness on the Airfield: New Automation on PASSUR OPSnet

Field Condition Reporting (FCR) - including "eNOTAMs" and tenant advisories - is becoming a true "3C" (Collaboration, Communication, Coordination) process on PASSUR OPSnet. Airport users all over the world can instantly know the most recent and relevant information about the airport. At DEN for example, there are now more than 1,300 registered users of PASSUR OPSnet, many situated outside the airport. At JFK and LGA there are 755 and 468 users, respectively - around the country and around the world.

This effective collaboration, communication and coordination is being enhanced in several ways:

  • Integration between PASSUR OPSnet FCR ("Airside Operations") and the flight services eNOTAM system means that all NOTAM updates can be entered in one place, on PASSUR OPSnet. The NOTAM automatically submits to flight services, and then also:
    • Immediately updates the FCR page, so all registered users can see the update instantly.
    • Immediately emails the changes to all registered users.
  • Tenant Advisories are distributed in the same way (without the flight services piece).
The integration with FAA eNOTAMs is now in its final field test phase, and will be going live shortly. For more information on how you can move to eNOTAM integration and auto-email capabilities, please contact PASSUR customer service at 866-437-7247.
Summer Construction Season - Keeping Everyone Informed
The summer construction season is almost upon us, and a common pressing need is for shared information about closures, current and planned.

snowplaneThe new PASSUR OPSnet eNOTAM integration, together with the auto-email feature, is making it easier for airports to manage the tough task of keeping all airport users abreast of their construction projects, scheduled closures, and movement restrictions.

What's more, the ability for the airport to manage its own documentation on PASSUR OPSnet means that airfield maps of current and planned closures can be added, helping to address the FAA's advisory circular recommending "visual NOTAMS."

The 2009 Snow Season Wraps Up at New York JFK and Boston
Last month, both Denver and Milwaukee shared how PASSUR OPSnet helped them improve their performance during the 2009 snow season. This month, we head to the Northeast to see how Boston Logan and New York JFK fared.

BOS - Vincent Cardillo of Boston Logan credits PASSUR OPSnet with making significant contributions to improving 2009 winter storm performance. Cardillo cited a severe snow event on March 1st and 2nd as an example. "By using the Master Coordination Screen, we at Massport were able to correctly determine the true arrival and departure demand. Knowing when, and to what degree, the flight schedule snowplanehad been thinned, we were very aggressive in treating, grooming and plowing the runways. As a result we were able to maintain a continuous arrival and departure operation." The airport remained open and all planned flights were completed, despite heavy and prolonged snowfall. PASSUR OPSnet's chat function created enhanced communication between all operating units at the airport.

JFK - John Selden of JFK is pleased with the role PASSUR OPSnet played in JFK's winter storm performance. "Effective storm management was made possible through the use of PASSUR OPSnet," said Selden. "Secondary deicing was minimal, occurring to only a couple of flights when an international wide-body aircraft became disabled on a runway. In addition, because of enhanced communication and coordination, we were able to provide three runways during critical periods - runways 4L, 4R and the long bay runway, 31L were available when needed most. With these resources we were able to aggressively respond to deteriorating conditions."

During the March 1st and 2nd snow event, departure metering using the Departure Management Module on PASSUR OPSnet was triggered on several occasions, to avoid taxi delays, surface congestion and secondary deicing. Both the Master Coordination Screen and the Departure Slot Allocation Screen provided highly reliable departure demand data.
