What the People Say
| "Advertising is a tax for having an unremarkable product"
Robert Stephens | |
"The more we elaborate our means of communication, the less we communicate."
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804)
"News should be put before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light."

Greetings!
Hope you are enjoying all these bank holidays? Mind you, many self-employed people don't really take time off. I've been working on updating my website, launching a new WordPress blog service and fretting about book 2 (see below). Jackie |

You've heard that you have to turn features into benefits. That you should write from your customer's point of view. That you ought to use the word 'you' more than you use the word 'we'. So here's an example of how it's done:
Before Each apartment features a unique layout, designed with ease of living in mind. These luxury apartments offer ample space for everyday living.
After If you are looking for great accommodation with a light and contemporary layout, designed with ease of living in mind, you'll find we have an apartment to suit you.
If you want to check your own website, you can use the We We Test.

Lessons from authors
When asked what he would do if his doctor gave him but one week to live, Isaac Asimov - who wrote more than 500 books and countless other articles and treatises - replied: "Type faster."
Louis L'Amour produced more than 100 different Western novels during his career. How did he do it? Whenever he typed the words "The End" into his old Remington typewriter, before he even got out of his chair to do a celebration dance, he scrolled in the next page and typed "Chapter 1." That way, he was already emotionally anchored in the next book, and at less risk of deciding to celebrate by goofing off for a week or a month, or the rest of his life.
About ten years ago, I heard a speech by the author of the book Shoeless Joe (upon which the movie Field of Dreams was based). He said that to be a writer required just four things. Creativity, he said, accounts for about 5%, technique for another 5%, and craft for yet another 5%. The remaining 85%, he said, was stamina - which he defined as sitting down to write your 50th short story upon receiving your 49th rejection letter.

On a personal note
I'm frustrated.
It feels like a-g-e-s since I pressed 'go' to distribute my new book online and people keep asking when they can buy it. But 'The Little Fish Guide to Networking' is still not showing on Amazon. Even in this speedy Internet age, they say it takes 6-8 weeks. So it should be available in online bookshops any day now - promise! If you can't wait, you can buy it direct from me. In fact, you can save £2 when you buy both my books together.
