Writing Without Waffle
Greetings!

Congratulations to Vanessa Buck who spotted the mis-spelling of 'idleness' in last month's issue. I'd like to say it was a deliberate mistake. But it wasn't. It was just me, typing too quickly and not checking my own work! Oh how I hate it when I get things wrong, especially when I call myself a proofreader.

* Hangs head in shame.

Jackie

P.S. Please let me know if you'd prefer this newsletter in plain text and I'll change your preferences in my mailing list for next month and beyond.
Ooer, what's it cost?

Some people worry that professional creative services cost more than they can afford to pay. But, remember, the whole point is that you're buying quality marketing that should easily provide return on your investment.

At a time like this, clients want more value.

Since the start of 2009, more clients have asked me to justify ROI than ever before. It's tricky, because - as the saying goes - 50% of any marketing budget is wasted, but nobody knows which half!

I'll give you a fixed price quote before starting any work. In the interests of transparency and openness, here is the basis of my fees so you can budget:

-    Consultancy, Mentoring and Training £90 per hour
-    Copywriting and Design £60 per hour
-    Print and Delivery Charged at cost price
-    Travel time Half price
-    Expenses Charged at cost price
-    VAT Added for the Government at the current rate of 15%
-    Guest speaking Sometimes free, sometimes charged by the hour, depending on the event
-    In the industry? Ask about my trade rates
-    Want a lot of work? Goody! Ask me for a bulk discount

With all my years of experience, I work quickly and you'd be surprised what I can achieve in an hour!

How many new customers do you need in order to justify the cost of professional marketing?

How NOT to give a presentation

I went to a recent presentation about sales. The presenter introduced it: "I'm sorry, but this is going to be boring. Sales is sales is sales."

I thought she would then jump up and say: "Oh no, it isn't! Sales are EXCITING! They are the moment you win the business and make the money!"

But she didn't.

She had good open body language with a confident stance. She had a smart appearance and wore a colourful scarf that attracted attention. She had a great voice and eye contact with the whole audience. But she was right, her presentation was boring.

On a Personal Note

Due to the wonders of modern technology, I've found I can work just as effectively on the other side of the planet. I've been doing some work in Australia and New Zealand for the past few weeks. The only disadvantage is the time difference. But in some ways, it's been even easier to be productive, because everyone in the UK is asleep while I'm working, so I'm not constantly interrupted by incoming phone calls and emails!

Checking messages at the beginning of each day and sending replies at the end of each day is a discipline I hope to maintain on my return (yeah, right)!
