Greetings!

Greetings!
The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is a non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety. We engage in public education campaigns throughout the year to reduce electrically-related fires, fatalities, injuries, and property loss. ESFI sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May to increase public awareness of the electrical hazards around us at home, work, school, and play. All of our safety resources are available at no cost on our website at www.electrical-safety.org.

Fire Prevention Week is Almost Here!

Be sure to mark your calendars! ESFI is once again teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote Fire Prevention Week 2012, taking place October 7-13. ESFI's resources complement NFPA's "Have 2 Ways Out" Campaign, which focuses on planning to make a safe escape during a fire, by educating the public about how to prevent home electrical fires before they start.

The ESFI Fire Prevention Week 2012 Toolkit  provides resources to help families take steps to prevent electrical fires while also becoming better prepared in the event of a fire. The toolkit features the Electrical Fire Safety Checklist, which can be used to help identify and correct home electrical fire hazards. Also included are detailed tip sheets about how to properly maintain both smoke alarms and arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs).

Additional ESFI fire safety resources support NFPA's message of "Have 2 Ways Out." The Virtual Fire Drill is an interactive demonstration that allows families to put their fire safety knowledge to the test while "escaping" from a simulated home fire. P.I. Plug's Smoke Alarm Safety Video teaches children about the importance of smoke alarms as well as simple fire safety skills. For a full list of multimedia resources that convey critical fire safety messages, visit ESFI's website.

Disaster Safety Resources Available

The Dog Days of Summer are here, bringing with them not just hot temperatures, but also the peak of hurricane season. While we hope that Mother Nature won't force us to take cover, ESFI has a variety of resources dedicated to helping the public stay safe in the wake of a hurricane or other severe weather event. These include flood safety tips, lightning safety tips and resources addressing downed power lines.   Additionally, ESFI has extensive resources about portable generators, which are often employed during power outages in the aftermath of severe storms. These valuable portable generator resources include installation and safety tips, frequently asked questions, a video public service announcement and a virtual safety demonstration. The video components are available in both English and Spanish

ESFI Awarded FY2011 Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant

ESFI is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a FY2011 Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant from the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (DHS/FEMA). This is ESFI's fourth consecutive FP&S award and the largest award amount to-date.

FP&S Grants are awarded annually to support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to target high-risk populations in order to reduce injuries and prevent deaths.

ESFI will utilize the grant funds to create additional components for the acclaimed Investigate with P.I. Plug children's fire and electrical safety awareness program  and also to develop a new series of resources for older adults, another high-risk demographic.

ESFI to Participate in NECA 2012 Convention in Las Vegas

ESFI will be exhibiting at the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) 2012 Convention taking place September 29 through October 2 in Las Vegas, NV. The NECA Convention is America's leading Power System, Lighting and Cabling Exposition, and ESFI will be on site with free electrical safety resources. Are you attending? Be sure to visit us at booth 862 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Sincerely,

The Electrical Safety Foundation International
