Electrical Safety ExtraNovember 2011

The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) is a non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety. We engage in public education campaigns throughout the year to reduce electrically-related fires, fatalities, injuries, and property loss. ESFI sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May to increase public awareness of the electrical hazards around us at home, work, school, and play. All of our safety resources are available at no cost on our official website at www.electrical-safety.org.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) has recently presented two awards that recognize excellence in the field of electrical safety.

Richard "Rich" Widdowson received the Foundation's annual Outstanding Service Award in Honor of Harold Leviton, an award that was formally established in 2008 as a tribute to Harold Leviton's impressive legacy and dedication to improving electrical safety. Mr. Widdowson received the award during a recent meeting of the ESFI Workplace Safety Committee. As the current Committee Chairman, Mr. Widdowson has overseen the development of many important ESFI safety programs, including the groundbreaking Never Assume Electrical Safety Series. Mr. Widdowson has been with Schneider Electric, an industry safety leader, for 38 years and currently holds the position of Vice President, Safety, Environment and Real Estate for North America.

Mr. Electric® was named as the recipient of the 2011 Safety Award for Excellence (SAFE), presented by ESFI for outstanding efforts in promoting electrical safety. Jeff Meyers, President, accepted the honor on behalf of Mr. Electric during the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)'s 2011 Illuminations Weekend held late last month in Washington, D.C. Mr. Electric has been a proud supporter of ESFI for the last eight years. Since 2007, under the leadership of Jeff Meyers, the company has taken an even more active role in ESFI activities and programs. During National Electrical Safety Month this past May, Mr. Electric played an integral role in disseminating the campaign's important safety messages, resulting in outstanding utilization of the campaign's resources and unprecedented exposure through social media channels.

ESFI Kicks Off 2011 Holiday Safety Campaign

Cherished family traditions are a large part of what makes the holiday season so special. Along with recipes that have been passed down through generations and the yearly search for the perfect gift for a loved one, ESFI is urging families and communities to adopt another important tradition this holiday season - safety.

Statistics show that increased risks of fire and preventable accidents come along with this celebratory time of year, proving the need for families to practice caution as they carry out their holiday traditions. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics indicate that 30% of all home fires and 38% of home fire deaths occur during the months of December, January, and February. Injuries resulting from falls are also a serious concern this time of year, as well as poisonings from common household items and carbon monoxide.

The 2011 Make Safety a Tradition campaign touches on all aspects of holiday safety, with the overarching theme of children's safety. An integral part of the holiday safety program is ESFI's annual Holiday Safety Community Toolkit that provides consumers with a collection of new resources to help them make safety a priority all season long. In addition to the Toolkit, ESFI has developed four new holiday-themed video public service announcements (PSAs), which reinforce the campaign's critical safety messages.

ESFl's complimentary 2011 Holiday Safety Community Toolkit and many more holiday safety resources can be found on the Foundation's seasonal website at www.holidaysafety.org. We encourage you to use these resources to promote holiday safety in your company, community and family.

New Program Helps Kids Plug In to Holiday Safety

Earlier this year, ESFI was awarded a FY 2010 Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant from the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (DHS/FEMA). This grant award allowed for the development of additional children's holiday safety materials to complement ESFI's existing resources and tools.  Among these new resources is the Plug In to Holiday Safety fire and electrical safety awareness program, which delivers critical holiday safety messages to elementary school children in grades 3 through 5. This classroom program, the third in our popular Investigate with P.I. Plug series, is being distributed to 114,000 classrooms nationwide this holiday season, and will directly impact over 3.4 million children and their families in communities with a greater than average risk of fires.

All of ESFI's children's holiday safety resources are available at no charge on our website at www.electrical-safety.org.
