I'm way to busy to exercise!

Dear Dr. Susan,

No matter how I try, I can't find time to exercise "at least three times a week for thirty minutes" the way everyone suggests. Can you help me figure out how to do it,

thanks!

Feeling Sluggish

Dear Sluggish,

First of all, let go of all the 'rules' about exercise that you've heard over and over. There are so many ways to make sure you get some movement into your life that all you need to do is get a little creative. Here are a few ideas to help you:

#1. It doesn't have to be thirty minutes all at once. Squeeze in ten minutes three times a day and you've done it--so easy :)

#2.No guilt. If you really can't get in thirty minutes (even divided), at least three times a week, then just do as much as you can and focus on what you are doing rather than what you aren't!

#3. Multitask. For example, do some situps, pushups, and leglifts while you're watching your favorite show.

#4. Start fresh every day. That means if you missed a day of exercise (or even two), then today, just fit it in and move forward with a positive attitude. Your goal isn't to be perfect, you goal is to exercise--save your energy for that!

#5 Pick something that you think you'll enjoy. If you try and do exercises or activities that you don't like, you'll give up almost immediately. Think about what you would enjoy and try it for a while to see if you're right.

#6 Make movement part of everyday life. You've heard it before, but it REALLY works: take the stairs rather than the elevator; walk around the mall or town (without eating snacks!);  volunteer for garden or yard work!

Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
