Losing weight fast!
Dear Dr. Susan,

I am starting school in two weeks and I need to lose 20 pounds! Can you give me a diet to lose 10 pounds a week, thanks!

--In a hurry to be skinny

Dear Hurried,

Sorry...but nope I can't!  It really isn't at all safe to try and drop lots of weight all at once--even if you feel like you have to!

Trying to lose weight fast can be dangerous because even when you are overweight you still need to eat a certain amount of calories for your body and brain to work properly. If you cut out too many calories, you won't have energy, you could faint, you could feel really sick and you won't be able to think clearly--and that's just the beginning! If you keep it up, it can be really dangerous for your body.

In addition, fast weight loss almost always doesn't last. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is a little at a time--a pound (or two at the most) a week. In the very beginning you may lose a bit more, because your body gets rid of water. But once you're about a week into a healthy weight loss program, one pound a week is perfect for a teenage girl.
Dr. Susan's Girls-Only Weight Loss Guide, or any other healthy weight loss plan specifically designed for teenage girls, is the way to go. Make sure your doctor has told you how much weight you need to lose so that you have a healthy goal.

Stay away from fads, crash diets, pills, or any other weight loss plan that promises miracle results. If it sounds too good to be true, IT IS--and could even be dangerous enough to kill you by speeding up your heart rate much too fast!

SO...no matter how badly you want to lose weight, do it a little at a time, your body will thank you very much!! Make one small change, then add another, before you know it you'll be doing it!
Name Dr. Susan's Facebook Page

I received so many awesome ideas to name my new Girls-Only Facebook page--thank you to everyone that submitted ideas and for all the other advice you have given me. I really appreciate the time you took and how thoughtful you have been!

So now let's vote on the top two names and I'll pick one! You need to vote on two things--first the name; and then whether it should say 'Girls' OR "Young Women" at the end. So here are the choices:

  • Dr. Susan's Life Advice for Girls
  • Dr. Susan's Life Advice for Young Women
  • Dr. Susan's Fit & Fun Fact for Girls
  • Dr. Susan's Fit & Fun Facts for Young Women

Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
