Greetings!

This weekend I went to visit some good friends at the beach. It felt great to relax and connect with people I really care about. It also gave me a chance to think about how important it is to be outside as much as possible--breathing in fresh clean air and reminding your body that you really want to take care of it--NO MATTER what your shape!

All my friends are stick thin! What can I do?
Dear Dr. Susan,

All my friends are stick thin and I just want to be able to go in the same stores as them in the mall and try on the same clothes and feel like I fit in. I avoid shopping with my friends because I feel so big compared to all of them. I am also really shy at school because I feel that no one will like me because of my weight. Any Advice?
        --Overweight and Shy

Dear Overweight and Shy,

It can be REALLY tough when all your friends are super-skinny and you aren't! I remember feeling exactly like that when I was in high school. Here are a couple of thoughts to help you.

1. Even at your healthiest weight, you might not be stick thin because everyone has a different body shape. It's VERY important to work on having the healthiest body for you, rather than comparing yourself to other girls. Believe me! I'm at a healthy weight now and I still have friends who are way skinnier than me! In fact, even now at my perfect weight you wouldn't catch me in a bikini!! So focus on your own health, not on comparing yourself to other girls, because it won't make you feel better about yourself.
2. Shopping can be tough, especially if you are self conscious about your body. However, it's important to choose the right people to shop with. I bet you have some friends who aren't sticks! These are the girls to go to the mall with for serious shopping. In fact, it's not only about your weight. Some friends are more supportive, some are more critical, some give honest advice and some just don't. These are also things to consider when you pick a shopping friend (I consider all of these issues and I find that I only have one or two really close friends that I'll shop with.)
3. Until you find the perfect shopping partner, you should still go to the mall with your friends! If trying on clothes makes you feel uncomfortable, then focus on accessories: jewelry, bags, scarves, shoes, hats. There's tons to keep you busy!
4. It's important to separate your personality and WHO you are from what your body looks like. I'm sure it's only you that thinks no-one will like you because of your weight. I bet once you let your real, not-shy self shine through, you will find that people like you just fine! In fact, the more confidence you develop in yourself, the less likely it is that you will use food to cope with your feelings and then the healthier you will become. Before you know it, you will be feeling healthy inside AND out!
Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
