Greetings!

Last night I went to see James Taylor and Carole King in concert at Madison Square Garden in NYC. It was amazing--and Carole King was a true inspiration. She is 68 years old and singing and jumping around the stage like a teenager. If you've never heard her music, you should listen to it. It's wonderful and I bet she'll inspire you too!

Girls are drinking more Alcohol than boys!
Girl journalingA new study says that middle and high school girls are drinking more than boys. Seriously? I thought girls were smarter than boys!

The report says that since girls are more tuned in to their feelings they feel things more strongly, so they have more drama. Well, we all know that!

BUT, the result is that girls turn to alcohol to cope with life's stresses more often than boys do.

Come on girls...when you're stressed, feeling bad about yourself, or dealing problems--drugs and alcohol are NOT the way to go. In fact, your problems will get worse because they make it harder for you to think clearly and can cause depression and anxiety--even in small amounts.

Instead of turning to that stuff, try one or more of these ideas instead:

  • Talk to someone
  • Write in a journal
  • Take a walk or some other kind of exercise
  • Draw, paint, sculp, create
  • Write a poem (send it to me--I LOVE poetry!)
  • Get in touch with nature (go to the beach, sit in a park, look at mountains)
  • Take a long shower or bath
  • Listen to awesome music
  • Cook
  • Clean (yes, some people find it relaxing!)
  • write a letter (send it or don't)
  • Remind yourself that you are too wonderful to make choices that could damage your body!
Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
