Greetings!

Welcome to summer! If you've known me for a while you know that I LOVE the warm weather, so I am so happy that it is finally here!! How about you--do you prefer warm or cool weather?

I've been getting feedback lately about the newsletter. Girls have been telling me that they would like it to be shorter and more frequent. I've also been receiving so many emailed questions from all of you out there--which is great!

Sooo...I've decided to switch things up a bit.

  • I'm going to send the newsletter more often--I'll aim for every other week (hopefully I'll actually get to that--I admit to being a bit of a procrastinator!!)
  • Each newsletter will be a much quicker read.
  • Some newsletters will be just a Question and Answer based on the tons of emailed questions I receive. I will ALWAYS make the questions anonymous--never include anyone's name, email or place they live and I'll even change some details so it could be anybody. I think this will be helpful to everyone because so many of the questions I receive apply to many girls!

So that's what we're going to try starting right now! Today's newsletter is a Q and A...ready??? I am!!

Love yourself!
Q. Dear Dr. Susan,
I have always had a pudgy stomach and love-handles. They won't go away, no matter how hard I try. Will I always have them or is there something I can do about it?

A. Losing weight slowly and healthily--which is the BEST way to do it--doesn't mean that you will lose weight everywhere on your body. It is possible that once you have lost the right amount of weight (the amount your doctor says you should lose), you may still have a little covering around your midsection. This is perfectly normal for many girls and women and it isn't something to feel bad about! There is no such thing as a 'perfect' body. Your body needs to be healthy and strong. If your doctor says that your weight is in a healthy range and if you eat good foods and you exercise, I REALLY don't think you should worry about a little pudge or love handles. Of course, if your doc says it would be fine for you to lose ten pounds, then you should make a few healthy changes and very slowly work on losing some weight. You may need to talk to a nutritionist about the best way to do this if you really think you've been trying hard and nothing has worked. Perhaps you will see a difference if you do this. I suspect though, if you're really trying and doing everything right, this is your body's way of saying you should be happy, healthy and love yourself!!
Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
