Greetings!

Lot's of teens get stressed beginning around now...for some it's waiting to hear whether they got into the college they want to attend (good luck if you're one of them!); for others it's starting to prepare for finals and AP exams; and for others it's beginning to search for a summer job, which can be tough to do in this tight economy.

But at the same time, the summer is getting closer and closer and that sigh of relief is almost in sight!  So this is a confusing time of year, but I'm right with you.

How are you feeling right now? Let me know, and maybe I'll print some responses from readers in my next newsletter.

Can advertising cause YOU to make bad choices?

This study finds that a cigarette company has been
Dr. Susan
successfully able to attract teen girls despite everything you learn in school about how really BAD smoking is, and even though cigarette companies are not supposed to deliberately advertise cigarettes to kids and teens.

So how does it happen?!

Teens need to learn to get better at standing strong against advertisers who are trying to get them to use products that may not be good for their health. To do this you first need to recognize the advertising directed at you no matter how subtle it may be. For e.g.:

  • Ads for alohol featuring 'cool' people doing 'cool' things (like snowboarding, windsurfing, partying) are trying to reach a teen audience, even if they don't admit it.
  • Junk food ads made to look more 'grown up' and less babyish are targeted at you, rather than your little brother or sister, so don't be fooled!
  • Movies and TV shows use product placement (showing brand-name products to make you want to buy them). Don't be fooled into purchasing a product just because an actor was using it in a movie you liked!

Once you become educated you won't be at the mercy of advertisers who don't care about your health or your money! Now, pass these tips onto your friends and siblings.
Prepare for finals fantastically

5 tips that really work!

  1. Start studying now. Really! If you begin a little at a time, it won't be nearly as overwhelming. So go ahead, make an outline or an index card or two; hilight a page--just do something!
  2. Make a study group. Sometimes studying with a small group of friends can be motivating and you can learn from each other. Sometimes it's better if it isn't your best friends because you will be less likely to be distracted by 'fun'.
  3. Get help. Don't be embarrassed to ask the teacher, older student or a tutor for help when you need it. Go to review classes. Asking  for help doesn't mean you're a failure, NOT asking for help could mean that you will fail!
  4. Get enough sleep. Giving up sleep to studyrelationships or friendships--you will feel more accountable for really following through.
  5. Review regularly. Every couple of months, check in with yourself to see how you're doing. Are you still on target? Do you need to work a bit harder, re-resolve? You have a whole year to meet your goal, you can do it!

Q. Dear Dr. Susan,
I really want to lose weight fast for the prom, how can I do it?

A. Actually, losing weight fast isn't healthy and it usually isn't successful either! No matter how badly you want to lose weight--for a special occasion, a vacation or any other reason, it just isn't good for you to crash diet, starve yourself or try any other 'special' way of losing weight in a hurry. In fact, it could backfire on you! Your body could get confused when you suddenly start eating so much less and it will hold onto what you do eat, causing you to stop losing weight all together! In addition, you might find yourself dizzy, nauseous and fuzzy minded--not a great idea any time, and especially not during finals! So, think again...find a dress that looks great on you right now and lose weight the right way...sloooowly!!
Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
