Greetings!

Happy New Year!! I have to admit that I'm a little sad that the holiday season is over. I really enjoy the sparkly lights, happy faces and of course the great sales on clothes!! I also loved the vacation! But now it's back to work and school for everyone.

So, what's your New Year's resolution? I've received lots of email from girls and guys saying that their resolution is to lose weight or get healthier. I think that's the most common resolution people make. The trick is to really stick to your commitment to be heatlhy for the whole year.

I have a few resolutions, and one of them is to exercise more regularly.

Is email spam endangering your health?

A new study has found that teens are more likely than adults to buy weight loss products that they get as email spam! These products often don't work--or worse can be really dangerous! So not only do you waste your money, but you might be putting your health in serious jeopardy!

If you get weight loss spam/emails, delete them immediately and don't be tempted to purchase any products--especially without your parent's AND a doctor's approval. In addition, here are a couple of tips:
  • Just because a product says it 'contains natural ingredients' doesn't mean it is safe!
  • Detoxification products can also be dangerous--stay away from them.
  • Be aware that when you visit weight loss websites you may be tracked and end up in an email database. Don't sign up for any information for pills, products, supplements or detoxification products on weight loss websites--you will start getting lots of spam!
  • If you feel stressed or bad about your weight or body image, talk to an adult you trust. Buying weight loss products that might hurt your body, will NOT make you feel better about your body or yourself!
Keep Your New Year Resolution!

5 solid tips for sticking to you resolution!

  1. Don't make too many. Make only one or two at the  most, you'll have a much better chance at success.
  2. Be specific. Make a concrete, not vague resolution. For example, resolve to lose 5 pounds, not to 'lose weight'; resolve to 'be less critical of your friends', not just to 'be a nicer person'.
  3. Write it down. When you see it in black and white, you'll be more likely to stick to it.
  4. Tell someone. When you tell others what you are committing to--whether it is related to better health, working harder in school, or improving your family relationships or friendships--you will feel more accountable for really following through.
  5. Review regularly. Every couple of months, check in with yourself to see how you're doing. Are you still on target? Do you need to work a bit harder, re-resolve? You have a whole year to meet your goal, you can do it!

Q. Dear Dr. Susan,
I don't think I'm that fat except for my stomach. I want to lose weight only there. So, what do I do to get a really flat stomach?

A. Sorry, but there's no way to tell your body exactly where you want it to lose weight! Everyone is different and some people--even at their healthiest, have slightly bigger stomaches, thighs, arms or some other part of their body. However, it is important to eat healthily and exercise. If you want to have a healthier looking stomach, make sure that you are eating the right foods and that you are exercising--including cardio  four or five times a week and ab exercises a couple of times a week (just don't overdo it!). Most importantly, it's important to love yourself and realize that it would be really boring if everyone looked exactly the same!!
Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
