Caffeine doesn't sober you up:
A new study--just in time for the holiday party season--finds that drinking coffee (or another caffeinated beverage) won't improve your sobriety enough to make it safe enough for you to drive.
The bottom line: Alcohol increases your alertness, but it DOES NOT improve your cognitive functioning. This means that your brain is tricked into thinking you are less drunk than you really are and so you might make decisions that put you or others in danger.
If you are the parent of a teen, it is important to convey this information to your child because teens almost always believe that caffeine will sober them up! In addition, drinks like Joose, Hard Wired, and Wide Eye, are alcoholic energy drinks which have recently come under scrutiny by the FDA for their attractiveness to underage drinkers. |
