Preventing injury during fun in the sun
Now that the weather is warm, you are spending more time outside--making injury more likely! Over 1.5 million people are treated for head injuries, & over 12,000 each year for neck fractures, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Many injuries are happen during sports and play, BUT, according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, LOTS come from products around your home including--ladders, all playground equipment, porches/balconies, fences, trampolines, hand/power tools, garage doors.
The following tips will keep your child safe:
- supervise younger children well
- don't leave ladders out/unsecured
- lock up all tools/equipment, throw away broken tools
- make sure garage doors are in good working order
- Enforce helmet rules for all 'wheeled' sports
- Vigorously supervise swimming pools-especially 'no diving' in shallow water
