A Teachable Moment
Anger and Forgiveness
It was almost in slow motion that Jeanette watched her favorite bowl fall-at least until the crash and shatter into thousands of pieces. Eight-year old Emily stopped twirling and stood frozen, partly in fear of being hurt by broken glass, but mostly because she realized that her elbow had just knocked over her mother's beloved heirloom.

Independent Kids are more active
A very interesting study demonstrates that when parents allow their children to be more socially independent, kids are more likely to be physically active. Of course, the more physically active a child is, the more likely to be healthy. Of course, no parent wants a child in a dangerous situation, but there are ways to encourage independence, without risking your child's safety. For example:
- children above the age of nine can ususally walk safely from one home to another in the neighborhood in pairs or groups. (you can ask your child to call when he gets there)
- your child can play alone in the backyard with a friend or group.
- A group of children can walk to school together without adult supervision.
