Resolutions that Rock!

Many teens make New Year's resolutions to lose weight, exercise 7 days a week or never eat junk food. Some promise to get a boy or girlfriend, never fight with their parents or get all A's in school!

Guess what...resolutions like these are impossible to achieve because they are so extreme. But it is possible to make and keep great resolutions:

6 Tips for Sticking to your New Year's Resolutions
  1. Choose only ONE resolution.
  2. Avoid extreme resolutions (those that contain the words 'never', "all", 'always' etc).
  3. Make yours specific, measurable, healthy. Ex: resolve to lose 5 pounds (NOT lose a ton of weight (extreme, not measurable and possibly unhealthy!)
  4. Set short-term goals. Ex: try a new fruit each week; exercise 10mins/3x/week the first three months & 20mins/3x/week the next three.
  5. Set long-term goals. Ex: losing 1 pound every 3 weeks; exercise 4 days/week by end of the year; eat 3 pieces of fruit every day by the end of the year.
  6. Review your goals regularly and change if necessary, so by 12/31/10 you have reached your resolution!
More TV, IM, txtg=less fitness!

IM'ingA new study found that girls who log more than 2 hours of screen-time (TV, texting, web, IM) a day are less likely to be fit.

But guess what, this isn't true for GUYS! The study found that they continue to be fit even when they are staring at a screen for hours a day. What's up with that girls?

It seems that guys are still exercising, but girls aren't. Good for you guys! Girls...don't let yourself get unfit or gain weight because you're spending too much time in front of a small screen. Always make your health a priority!

Q. Dear Dr. Susan, I skip breakfast because I'm not hungry and I want to lose weight. My parents tell me its a bad idea...are they right?

A. In this case, your parents are right...sorry! Even if you just eat a little bit, breakfast jump starts your metabolism and gives your body the message to start moving. If you don't eat in the morning, your body will keep storing calories and actually make it harder for you to lose weight. Try a piece of fruit or a string cheese is you're really not hungry.

Dr. Susan can't give you any personal medical or psychological advice in her newsletter. If you are worried about your physical or emotional health, it is really important to speak to your doctor or to another adult who can help you! Don't wait! If you are not sure who to talk to you can email Dr. Susan at drsusan@drsusanbartell.com and she can help you figure it out.
