FIBER HARVESTING CODE OF PRACTICE

The Suri Network Product Development Committee (SNPDC) has developed a Fiber Harvesting Code of Practice for Suri alpaca breeders. The Code of Practice provides clear and concise guidelines to maximize value of your suri fiber harvest and can be implemented regardless of the operation size, location, or final textile destination. It is a step-by-step guide to use in standard fiber preparation, shearing, sorting and packing techniques, thereby improving the national clip and creating credibility in the textile marketing industry. The 'Code of Practice' and a one page 'Cheat Sheet' is available for downloading on the Suri Network web site.  This code is the first of its kind for Suri fiber anywhere in the world, so we encourage members to review its contents and adhere to the guidelines so we can set the highest standards for the world market.

The SNPDC would also like to remind you that a one day seminar/workshop has been developed to give breeders a broad overview of the process of turning raw suri fiber into high quality end products.  It addresses the basics of fiber preparation, how husbandry skills play a role in determining the quality of fiber produced, how shearing techniques, breeding decisions all impact fiber processing and end products.

This comprehensive workshop is sponsored by the Suri Network and it provides materials and expert fiber instructors, you as host provide the location and facilities for this educational program.

If you are interested in hosting or attending one of these sessions, please contact Suri Network office to obtain information. Email office@surinetwork.org or call 970-586-5876.
