Twenty-five canal-related museums and cultural heritage sites have been selected to participate in a newly created Erie Canalway Partner Program. The program aims to offer increased visibility and technical assistance to sites, while further enhancing the visitor experience of the National Heritage Corridor.

The commission secured a $230,000 federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services

to fund the program, which designates partners into one of three categories based on their facilities, hours of operation, and significance as a canal site.

According to Beth Sciumeca, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, "Each one of our partners shares a different aspect of the canal's role in shaping New York and the nation. Some have important works of engineering, others have works of art or artifacts, and some

highlight the value of the canal today. By working together, each place can provide a bridge to the next, offering a more complete picture for residents and visitors."

Additional sites may apply to become partners in a second round of selection planned for 2011. For more information, visit www.eriecanalway.org.

New York's Canals Attract
International Attention

World Travel Market 2010New York's legendary canals were promoted along with other world class travel destinations at World Travel Market in London last week. The premier global event for the travel industry is a unique opportunity for the global travel trade to meet, network, and conduct business under one roof.

Lori Solomon Duell from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor joined Markly Wilson from I Love New York and Rick Rivers from Canal New York for a four-day intensive sales pitch. The trio met with senior travel industry professionals, government ministers, and representatives from international media to promote the New York State Canal System, its 234 communities, and cultural heritage and recreational attractions and experiences throughout the National Heritage Corridor.

As a result, New York's canals received international media coverage, as well as interest from tour operators and representatives from 15 countries. We'll continue to collaborate with our canal partners and I Love NY to follow-up and attract a growing number of international tourists to the canal corridor.

New report cites need to complete the Erie Canalway Trail
Cyclists on trail, NPSAs the bicycling season winds down, the Canalway Trails Association New York (CTANY), in collaboration with Parks & Trails New York, has released Closing the Gaps: A Progress Report on the Erie Canalway Trail. The report summarizes the status of efforts to complete the longest multi-use trail in the country, including recent progress and current obstacles to closing the remaining gaps.

Though much progress has been made toward completing the 360-mile Erie Canalway Trail from Buffalo to Albany, more effort is needed to fill critical gaps so that the trail can reach its full potential as a major tourism destination and local community resource.
