Judy Schmidt-Dean to Lead Commission
Judy Schmidt-DeanThe Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission recently elected Judy Schmidt-Dean as its new Commission Chair. Schmidt-Dean, who owns and manages the Schuyler Yacht Basin and RV Park on the Champlain Canal in Schuylerville, has served on the commission since 2002. She will serve as chair for a one year term. Schmidt-Dean replaces outgoing chairman Joseph Callahan, who served since 2008. 
 
Schmidt-Dean has long record of community service and advocacy for the canal system. In addition to serving as an Erie Canalway Commissioner, she is a board member and secretary for Canal New York Marketing and Business Alliance. Her long-standing dedication to improving and promoting the New York State Canal System earned her the "Spirit of the Canal" Award from the Canal Society of NYS in 2008.
 
Other commission officers re-elected were: Vice Chair Russ Andrews of Syracuse, Secretary Alan Vincent of Little Falls, and Treasurer Peter Welsby of Lockport.

World Canals Conference to Host Free

World Canals Conference logoJoin the party on Sunday, September 19!
The World Canals Conference kicks off in Rochester on Sunday, September 19 with a variety of free community events. Take advantage of a great day on the waterfront, even if you're not attending the conference. Find details on conference activities at www.wccrochester.org/.
  • Enjoy live music and dance, kids' activities, exhibits, and local food, beer and wine at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial from 1 to 5 pm.
  • Boat Parade and Cycling Event- Peddle or paddle your way into Rochester! Cyclist and boaters will converge at the Genesee Valley Park at 12:30 pm, where they'll make their way to Cornhill Landing.
  • Boat Tours- Tour the canal schooner Lois McClure from 10am to 6pm and see other historic vessels at Cornhill Landing throughout the afternoon.
  • Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concert at Cornhill Landing, 3 to 4pm
  • Art Exhibit- Re-inspired: An Artistic Navigation of the Erie Canal- on display at the Rochester Plaza Hotel.
World Canals Conference Flotilla
The World Canals Conference Flotilla kicks off in the Village of Waterford on Monday 9/13 at 8 am. Following three days of tours, music, and festivities at the Waterford Tugboat Roundup (September 10-12), historic and recreational vessels heading to the conference will depart from Lock E-2 and begin the trip west to Rochester. Follow their journey through the canal system!
 
NOTE: Flotilla vessels are not open to the public. But you may be able to chat with their captains and crews at one of these nightly stops:
  • Amsterdam 9/13
  • Little Falls 9/14
  • Sylvan Beach 9/15
  • Baldwinsville 9/16
  • Lyons 9/17
  • Pittsford 9/18

Trail Funds and Assistance Available from Parks & Trails New York
Application Deadline: October 12, 2010 Cyclists on trail, NPS
Parks & Trails New York is offering assistance to communities wishing to develop a new multi-use trail or increase use of an existing trail as part of its Healthy Trails, Healthy People Program. Five communities will be selected to receive help with technical issues, planning, public outreach, grant writing, fundraising, programming, organizational development and other activities critical to the long-term success of trail projects.
