Cycling the Erie Canal Set to Go!
500 Riders will cycle from Buffalo to Albany from July 11-18 
Cycling the Erie CanalCyclists young and old from all across the country will be descending on Buffalo this weekend in preparation for this Sunday's kick off of the 12th annual Cycling the Erie Canal bicycle tour, organized by Parks and Trails New York. The ride is an eight-day, 400-mile, recreational bicycle tour from Buffalo to Albany along the legendary Erie Canal. 
 
Cycling the Erie Canal riders will enjoy fine scenery and fascinating history throughout the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. The bicycle tour passes through historic canal villages and rural countryside. Along the way, canal historians and local experts will introduce participants to the people, places and things that make the Erie Canal so unique and so important to the history of New York State and the country.

It takes many hands to make a ride of this magnitude happen. PARKS AND TRAILS NEW YORK organizes the tour and works with several hundred volunteers in communities along the route who welcome riders and show them what makes the Erie Canal and upstate New York so special.
 
The NYS Canal Corporation is the Premier State Sponsor of the event for the 12th straight year. The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor is the event's Heritage Sponsor. 
 
Supporting sponsors include: CSEA, M+T Bank, Wegmans, and Brookfield Power. Ten Tourism Promotion Agencies along the route are sponsors:  Orleans County Tourism, Wayne County Tourism, Greater Rochester Visitors Association, Seneca County Tourism, Cayuga County Office of Tourism, Oneida County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau, Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Schenectady County and Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Preparing for the International Market 
Save the date! Upcoming tourism workshops will focus on how to attract and serve international visitors to the canal corridor.

August 31, Yesterday's Royal, Sylvan Beach,10 am to 1 pm
Sept. 1, Century House, Albany,10 am to 1 pm
Registration begins at 9:30 am
Registration fee: $25
 
Building on successes and lessons learned during the May 2010 Israeli Familiarization Tour, these workshops will highlight the benefits of bringing international visitors to upstate New York and how to promote our region and destinations to the international market.
 
The workshops are offered through a collaboration with I Love NY, Tourisn Promotion Agencies, NYS Canal Corp, and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. For more information, contact [email protected].
