The Lois McClure: Coming Soon to a Community Near You!
"Our Shared Heritage: World Canals Tour" Kicks off July 24McClure docked in Waterford, by John Crispin 2007
The majestic 88-foot canal schooner, Lois McClure, is traversing the Erie Canal and the New York State Canal System this summer, offering free tours and festivities at 20 ports-of-call. The vessel's first stop is planned for Whitehall on July 24 and the tour will culminate at the World Canals Conference in Rochester from September 17-22.

This year's tour provides a unique opportunity to rediscover the legacy of our shared heritage all along the canal and the role of the region's waterways in our history. The Lois McClure previously visited the canal system in 2007, when more than 30,000 people from around the State and world stepped aboard and back in time.

This year's expedition is made possible by a partnership among the New York State Canal Corporation, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership, with additional funding support from voyage sponsors, including Cabot Creameries.
A Canal Boat...with Sails?
McClure under sail, Ithaca 2007, photo by Jon ReisThe 90-foot schooner is a full-scale replica of an 1862 sailing canal boat. These unique vessels were designed to sail from lake cities to canal ports using wind power and then to lower their masts and sails when traveling along canals.

Visitors will be treated to the Lois McClure under full sail on August 20-22 when she visits Seneca Lake. The crew will lower the mast for all other stops to accommodate low bridges along the canal. The Tug C.L. Churchill has replaced the mules of yesteryear and will tow the Lois McClure throughout her voyage.
