Community Showcase: Mohawk Towpath National Scenic Byway
Mohawk River, Schenectady Stockade ParkIn 2010, the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway celebrates the five year anniversary of its designation as one of America's Byways®. The Byway is a series of local, county, and state highways along the Mohawk River from Waterford and Cohoes to Schenectady that helps to steer travelers to significant historic, scenic, and recreational sites. Along the way, the Byway tells the story of the waterway and its many layers of history-- from Native American times to the Erie Canal to the role river communities played in the industrial revolution and westward expansion of the country.

According to Byway Coalition Chairman Larry Syzdek, "This was the home of early technology, engineering, and science that started canals, railroads, ironworks, and electricity. Many common technological innovations trace their roots to experiments and early prototypes that started here, including: the railroad, clothespin, circular saw, light bulbs, iron boats, washing machines, counter sash windows, and mass-produced clothing."

"...Tolerance of differences allowed people of many different minds to settle together and share ideas in an environment that nurtured creativity. Liberty to be our best, freedom, and tolerance are at the heart of the story of the Byway and are the strength and richness of our communities today," says Syzdek.
