2010 Erie Canalway Heritage Award
Call for applications by February 25th
Village of Brockport, (c) Andy OlenickThe Erie Canalway Commission is accepting nominations for the 2010 Erie Canalway Heritage Award of Excellence through February 25, 2010. The award honors and celebrates significant places in the Corridor and recognizes excellence in advancing the goals of the Erie Canalway Preservation and Management Plan.
 
Municipalities, community groups, private entities, and non-profit organizations are encouraged to submit an application. Award recipients benefit from statewide recognition and promotion of their efforts as best practices taking place in the Corridor. A formal presentation of awards will take place at the Commission's annual meeting in June.

The City of Rochester is hosting the 2010 World Canals Conference, September 19-24, 2010. This is an excellent opportunity to share innovative waterway projects and programs that are taking place in the Erie Canalway and to learn from our counterparts from around the world.

Please consider presenting at the conference. The World Canals Conference Planning Committee requests submittals of Abstracts for Papers by March 1, 2010. Conference tracks include: Economic Development and Community Revitalization; Engineering, Management and Transport; Marketing and Tourism; and Education and Interpretation. http://www.wccrochester.org/
Local Waterfront Revitalization Program Awards Announced
Eighteen projects in the Corridor to benefit
Projects ranging from trail improvements to waterfront revitalization to watershed protection in the Erie Canalway will move forward, thanks to funding from the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program. The Department of State announced the awards in late December, including eighteen projects in the Corridor.

Historic Preservation Award Recognizes Outstanding Work in Western Erie
Main Street in Albion, NYThe Genesee/Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council and Western Erie Canal Alliance received a 2009 New York State Historic Preservation Award for their comprehensive, regional approach to economic development programs and historic preservation planning. The council and the alliance have effectively focused many of their programs on smaller communities where municipal staff may not have the benefit of historic preservation training. Congratulations!

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, established in 2000 by an Act of Congress, spans 524 miles across the full expanse of upstate New York. It includes the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego, and Champlain canals and their historic alignments. The Corridor encompasses 4,834 square miles in 23 counties and is home to 2.7 million people.
