Dear School of Ministry friend, Happy New Year!
As the season's festivities recede and the New Year begins, our thoughts naturally turn to the future. For some this means making a few New Year's resolutions, however, for others it is an important opportunity for taking stock, reflecting and planning that will drive lasting success in the New Year.
At the School of Ministry, we are equally engaged in the planning of another exciting year full of growing expectations. We take stock of the level of educational opportunities we provide, reflect on maintaining and improving our relationship with our broad community. In addition to our established graduate and certificate courses, we plan to continue to engage in providing quality programs, talks and communal building events throughout the year. As we begin a new year we want to highlight of a few of our programs and events for 2010.
We begin the year by welcoming our new students to the graduate program for the spring semester this Friday, January 8, 2010, with new student orientation.
Registrations for the spring semester of our Adult Faith Formation classes are being accepted. Classes begin January 16, 2010, and continue through the month of April.
On Monday, February 1, 2010, we continue to bring our SoM Seminar Series to the community. This event, termed "An Evening with Bishop Farrell," features a panel discussion on the Identity of a Catholic University. This panel discussion will focus on Bishop Farrell's commencement address given to the University of Dallas graduating class in May, 2009, which was later published in the August edition of Catholic News Service Origins magazine. The panelist will include Bishop Kevin J. Farrell, Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, John Allen Jr., CNN Vatican correspondent, Dr. Marti Jewell, Professor of Theology at the School of Ministry, Dr. Marcy Brown Marsden, Professor and chair of the Biology Department University of Dallas and Dr. Christopher Malloy, Associate Professor of Theology, University of Dallas. Please join us at 7:30 p.m. in the Church of the Incarnation on the University of Dallas campus. A reception will immediately follow.
In March, the School of Ministry will host its second annual Lenten Day of Spirituality. Scheduled for Saturday, March 13, 2010, this event is open to the public and will feature keynote speakers and breakout sessions in both English and Spanish. This year's keynote speaker is Donald Senior, C.P., President of Catholic Theological Union at Chicago, the largest Roman Catholic graduate school of ministry in the United States. Fr. Senior is also a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission.
Also in March, a group of faculty, staff and friends of the School of Ministry will travel to the annual Religious Education Congress in Los Angeles. If you are planning on attending please stop by booth #506 to visit or join us for wine and cheese at our special reception on Friday, March 19 from 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. in the Hilton Anaheim Hotel located adjacent to the Anaheim Convention Center. We would love the opportunity to see you and hear more about what you have been doing.
These are just a few of the upcoming events planned at the School of Ministry. Please click here to view the 2010 calendar of scheduled events.
On behalf of the faculty and staff, I want to thank you for your continuing support, pray that your goals become a reality and wish you the best for a successful New Year.
Sincerely,
Brian Schmisek, Ph.D.
